Indians' boys soccer team opens with non-league victory over Sprague

SALEM — Behind a well-balanced scoring and defensive effort, the Roseburg boys soccer team opened its season with a 3-0 non-conference victory over Sprague.

Manny Mendoza, who switched from defense to offense in the 11th minute, scored in the 13th off an assist from Steven Strickland.

Nicolas Sigala, a foreign exchange student from Chile, found the back of the net after Strickland took a free kick that went past the far post in the 26th minute. Josh Malone secured the loose ball and attempted a shot, which came up five yards wide of the goal, allowing Sigala to swoop in for the score.

Dan Faas earned a goal in the 39th minute off an Aaron Funderburk pass. Indian goalkeeper Brandon Johnson made three saves.

Roseburg travels to Ashland Saturday for a non-league game.

The Roseburg girls soccer team lost to Summit of Bend in its non-league season opener at Fir Grove Field Tuesday.

Indian freshman outside midfielder Brooke Strawn scored the game’s first goal in the eighth minute off an assist from Brittney Brock before the Storm rattled off three scores of their own.

“We are a much better team,” Roseburg coach Adam Blue said. “And I didn’t need to say that. The girls were saying that after the match.”

For Summit, Eve Hess scored in the 26h minute, Haley Estopare found the back of the net in the 77th minute and the Storm scored once more in a scramble in the box off a corner kick in the 80th minute.

Summit outshot Roseburg 21-8 and had 12 more shots on goal than the Indians. Indian senior goalkeeper Marah Baker made six saves.

Roseburg hosts Ashland at 1 p.m. Saturday at Finlay Field in a non-league game.
