Club news for 9-04-08



Drain TOPS best losers named

The Drain TOPS #181 awards for August’s weekly best losers were as follows: Aug. 4, a tie between Elizabeth Jacob and Roseanna Neely; Aug. 10, Shirley Sturtevant; Aug. 17, Doris Alsup; and Aug. 25, Marcia Faulkner. Their best loser for the month of August was Mary Addington. Honored KOPS for August were Bonnie Grimes, Myrna Berry and Cindy Jones.

The TOPS yearly picnic was hosted by Drain #181 and featured a treasure hunt walk, bingo, terrific food and good conversation. On Saturday, a number of chapter members are heading for the TOPS Rally in Coos Bay.

TOPS meets Mondays at the Drain Civic Center. Weigh-in begins at 7:30 a.m., with the meeting from 9 to 10 a.m..

Aglow meets

at Noah’s Ark

Roseburg Aglow International will meet for a breakfast buffet at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Noah’s Ark, 411 N.W. Safari Road, Winston.

The breakfast is $5 and will be followed by a meeting and tour at 10 a.m. The theme for the meeting is “Joy in the Journey.”

Sutherlin Grange holds flea market

The Sutherlin Community Grange No. 724 will have a flea market and craft sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday at 851 S. Comstock, Sutherlin.

New and used items will be sold including collectibles, books, household items, antiques and jewelry.

Astronomers party with stars

The 22th annual end-of- summer community star party will be hosted by Umpqua Amateur Astronomers in partnership with the Douglas County Museum and City of Roseburg Parks, weather permitting, from 8 to 10:30 p.m Saturday at Fir Grove Park on the side by the Roseburg Veterans Cemetery.

Come see the moon and Jupiter, learn about astronomy in Douglas County and meet local astronomy enthusiasts. Anyone interested in astronomy and stargazing is welcome to this free annual event.

Service groups invited to attend

The Coalition of Service Organizations meets at 11:30 a.m. Monday at the China Palace, 968 N.E. Stephens St., in Roseburg. Its mission is included as part of its title, and other service organizations are invited to join in developing a countywide coordination of events and support for each group’s endeavors. While each organization has specific interest and may differ from each other, the Coalition has helped each organization to better serve the citizens of Douglas County.

W.I.S.H. holds annual meeting

Working for Independent Supported Housing, W.I.S.H., will hold its annual meeting at 6 p.m. Monday in the SORB, Southern Oregon Regional Brokerage office, 929 N.W. Highland Street in Roseburg. Elections will be held.

W.I.S.H. promotes construction of housing for people with developmental disabilities.

Vietnam veterans change meeting

The Vietnam Veterans of America will conduct a monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Monday at the American Legion Hall, 406 S.E. Oak St., Roseburg. The change, for this month only, is due to the Labor Day holiday on the first Monday.

All Vietnam veterans are encouraged to attend and enjoy the camaraderie of their fellow veterans.

Hearing Loss group meets Monday

The Hearing Loss Association of Douglas County will hold their monthly membership meeting on Monday, 7 p.m. at the Mercy Community Education facility, 2459 Stewart Parkway, right next to Parkway Medical Supply/Pharmacy. This month’s speaker will be Roger Johnson of the Sutherlin Fire Department. Roger will give tips for folks who are hard of hearing when communicating with emergency responders. Friends and family are always welcome. Refreshments will be provided.

Hearing Loss Association of Douglas County is a service organization dedicated to helping people who are hard of hearing.

Two music clubs meet on Monday

The September meeting of Oregon Music Teachers Association, Roseburg District, is set for 10 a.m., Monday at the home of Jean Melo. At 11 a.m., the September meeting of Umpqua Valley Federated Music Club, associated with National Federated Music Clubs, will follow with their meeting. Members of both groups are urged to attend.

Writers critique

An Association of Writers will meet Monday at 10:45 a.m. in community room 2, Mercy Community Education Center, 2459 Stewart Parkway, Roseburg. Members should bring six copies of what they want to be critiqued. Non-members are welcome to visit.

Grief groups return after summer off

After taking the summer off, the Roseburg Chapter of the Compassionate Friends and Survivors of Suicide will hold a joint meeting on Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. in Room 1B of the Douglas County Health Department, 621 W. Madrone Street in Roseburg.

This will be the September meeting for Compassionate Friends, which normally meets fourth Mondays and is open to parents, grandparents and grown siblings who have experienced the loss of a child at any age, by any means. The Survivors group meets second Mondays and is open to anyone who has lost a loved one to suicide. Both support group offer encouragement and hope in the resolution of grief.

Gem and Mineral Club has potluck

The Umpqua Gem and Mineral Club will have its monthly potluck at 6 p.m. Monday at the James Meyers Activity Center, 990 W. Stanton St., Roseburg.

The meeting starts at 7 p.m. and a beading program will follow the business meeting.
