WINSTON-DILLARD 40TH ANNUAL MELON FESTIVAL — This three-day family festival begins at noon on Friday and continues throughout the weekend. Don’t miss live music from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and the 7 a.m. breakfast at Riverbend Park in Winston Saturday and Sunday. Saturday’s events include 9 a.m. grand parade registration at Grandway Shopping Center; 9 a.m. grow your own and produce decorating entries accepted; 11 a.m. gates, concessions, carnival open; 11 a.m. 40th annual grand parade on Main Street ending at Riverbend Park; 11:30 a.m. tractor show after the parade Dillard Farm Market, Old Highway 99 S.; noon festival kitchen opens, beef barbecue dinners; dog contest; bingo; live entertainment all afternoon, belly dancing; 4 p.m. chili cookoff; 6 to 7 p.m. Red Hatters fashion show; 7 to 9 p.m. North Star. 679-8713.

RAMBLE FOR RECOVERY — Join the race for recovery with a 7 a.m. registration and 8 a.m. start Saturday near the basketball and tennis courts at Stewart Park, Roseburg. Ramble for Recovery celebrates recovery from substance abuse by offering a 3K walk and 10K run. Also includes vendors, testimonials from people in recovery and free T-shirt for participants. Both courses are within the park. Live entertainment with Shasta Ray and the Downhome Band. Free event. Race-day and pre-race registration available. 672-5905.

ANNUAL GEM AND MINERAL SHOW — It’s a rock, mineral and gem bonanza from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sunday at the Douglas County Fairgrounds. Gem, mineral and fluorescent mineral displays, wheel of fortune, silent auction, raffle prizes, dealers, food available, lapidary demonstrations, prospecting booth, free door prizes every half-hour. Free admission; donations accepted. 679-7553.

UMPQUA VALLEY WINE, ART & MUSIC FESTIVAL — Celebrate life’s pleasures from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday in historic downtown Oakland. The theme for this year’s festival is “Yesteryear in Oakland.” Features 18 local wineries, a variety of food vendors, artisans and musical groups, including the Oregon Coast Lab Band Evolution and the band The Essentials. Participants are asked to dress in period clothing reminiscent of 1890 to 1910. Prizes will be awarded to best dressed man and woman. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children and will be sold at the festival. Proceeds go to City Park and City Hall improvements. Sponsored by the Oakland Economic Development committee.

COMMUNITY STAR PARTY — See stars with an astronomy group at 8 p.m. Saturday at Fir Grove Park, Harvard Avenue, Roseburg. Sponsored by the Umpqua Amateur Astronomers and the Douglas County Museum. Come see the moon and Jupiter; learn about astronomy and meet astronomy enthusiasts. Free annual event. 673-1081 or 673-4671.

LOST BOYS DOCUMENTARY “GOD GREW TIRED OF US” — Don’t miss an inspirational event at 9 a.m. Sunday at the Umpqua Unitarian Universalist Church, 2165 N.W. Watters, Roseburg. The showing precedes the visit of Akol Aguek, one of the “Lost Boys of Sudan” who will be speaking at local schools in Roseburg and at two public venues next week. The film follows the life of three of the “Lost Boys of Sudan” who lived in refugee camps and were relocated to the U.S. in 2001. 580-5823 or 672-0567.
