PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) After rejecting some of each others proposals, U.S. Senate candidates Republican Gordon Smith and Democrat Jeff Merkley have agreed to two debates, Oct. 9 in Portland and Oct. 13 in Medford.
Smith spokesman Lindsay Gilbride said it is unlikely the incumbent senator will agree to additional dates.
Merkely had accepted six debate invitations from across the state and had hoped for more.
His campaign has protested that two debates are insufficient.
In Oregons last major statewide race, the 2006 gubernatorial contest, Democratic Gov. Ted Kulongoski and Republican challenger Ron Saxton debated three times in Portland, once in Welches, and once in Medford.
