CAVE JUNCTION — Douglas got a pair of touchdowns and a safety from its defense and gave head coach Joe Polamalu his first win with a 38-0 rout of Illinois Valley in a non-league game Friday night.
Jacob Neilsen returned an interception 40 yards for a score and sophomore David Guthrie returned a fumble 55 yards for a TD for the Trojans (1-3). The Cougars turned the ball over seven times.
Paul Polamalu completed 7 of 13 passes for 109 yards, hooking up with Bryson Norton for a 21-yard score in the second quarter. Sky Woods and Jered Stoffal had TD runs, while Tim Urista kicked a 37-yard field goal. Woods was the team’s leading rusher with 35 yards on seven carries.
“Our kids definitely needed this win,” said Joe Polamalu. “We played sloppy in the first half, but improved in the second half. Our running game kicked in, and the defense stepped up and came up with some big plays.”
The Trojans visit Pleasant Hill next Friday in a non-league game.

EUGENE — Logan Silver threw six touchdown passes, three going to Jeff Bedbury, as the sixth-ranked Spartans defeated the Lancers in a non-league game.
Triton Crane rushed for 115 yards on 32 carries and scored all three touchdowns for S.U. (1-3). Quarterback Ryan Smedley was the top rusher with 35 yards on eight attempts, and Brian Nichols set up the first score with a 65-yard kickoff return.
“They’re a very good football team. We underestimated how physical they would be,” South Umpqua coach Kevin Hubbard said of Marist. “We couldn’t match their speed, but our kids didn’t quit. We got into the Power-I formatioin and ran at ’em, and our offensive line did a great job in the second half.”
S.U. hosts Illinois Valley next Friday at Loghry Field.

MERLIN — The seventh-ranked Knights (4-0) opened the scoring with a 67-yard fumble return in the first quarter and remained unbeaten with a non-league win over the Bulldogs.
Kyle Summers caught six passes for 62 yards, and Jake Gilman rushed for 39 yards for Sutherlin (1-3). Starting quarterback Dirk Kats suffered a knee injury in the third quarter and was replaced by Chris Mock.
The Bulldogs have a bye next Friday and host North Bend on Oct. 3 in their Far West League opener.

REEDSPORT — Led by shining performances from Keelan McDuffy and Cory Christoffersen, the Braves blew out Rogue River in their Sunset Conference opener.
McDuffy, a junior running back, rushed 14 times for 131 yards and two touchdowns and clocked in a 73-yard kickoff return for a score. Christoffersen, a junior, helped give Reedsport a quick 12-0 lead with 27-yard and 12-yard rushing touchdowns in the first quarter. He ran four times for 46 yards. Josh Palmer carried the ball nine times for 50 yards and a touchdown.
Reedsport (3-1) travels to Glide next Friday.

GOLD BEACH — The top-ranked Panthers got a pair of early punt returns for touchdowns from Jeff Knox and never looked back in handing Glide its first loss of the season.
Gold Beach (3-1), the defending Class 3A state champion, led 50-0 at halftime. Glide (2-1) avoided the shutout when Cole Walker caught a 20-yard TD pass from Landon Weimar in the fourth quarter.
The Wildcats finished with 154 yards total offense and the Panthers compiled 382.
“Gold Beach is ranked right where it needs to be,” said Glide coach Jeff Freeman. “A lot of our kids weren’t ready for a situation like that and Gold Beach played extemely well in the first half.”
SKYLINE LEAGUE
Camas Valley 60
Prospect 0
PROSPECT — The Hornets had no trouble with the Cougars, taking a 46-0 halftime lead en route to the Skyline League win.
Kurt Dever scored four touchdowns for Camas Valley (2-1), including scoring runs of 97 and 36 yards. He also caught a 55-yard TD pass from freshman quarterback Ryan Dancer and returned a punt 65 yards to paydirt.
Freshman Richard Andreas rushed for 53 yards and a TD, and caught a 46-yard scoring pass. Ben Carter, who had 73 yards rushing, had two TD runs.
Camas Valley has a bye next Friday, then returns to league play at home Oct. 3 against Triad.

Elkton 22
ELKTON — Senior quarterback Mackenzie Smith accounted for 362 of the Elks’ 400 net yards to help rally his team from a 36-6 fourth-quarter deficit, but Elkton still came up short against the Timberwolves.
Smith went 13-for-26 for 200 yards and one passing touchdown and also scored TDs on a 20-yard interception and a 1-yard quarterback sneak. He rushed for 162 yards.
Sophomore Brent Whipple had eight receptions for 70 yards and ran for 31 more. Sophomore Robert Serren made a pick late in the third quarter and caught Smith’s 20-yard touchdown pass with 6:00 remaining in the game.
“With six minutes left in fourth, we forced them to punt three times in a row,” said Elkton coach Bill Shaw, who added his team had 67 offensive plays to Triad’s 45. “Our kids turned it up a notch.”
Logan Trumbull had four touchdowns for the T-Wolves, including a 40-yard interception return with 9:49 left in the third quarter and a 50-yard punt return later in the quarter.
The Elks (0-2) host Prospect next Friday.

HALSEY — Central Linn’s Kaleb Scott rushed for 101 yards and scored two touchdowns, including a game-winning 81-yard kickoff return in the fourth quarter, to hand the Warriors their first loss in the Mountain View Conference opener for both teams.
Jake Rice gained a game-high 128 yards rushing on 17 carries and scored once for North Douglas (2-1). Cameron Derrick completed 6 of 9 passes for 114 yards and one TD, and added a 6-yard TD run. Tanner Toy caught a 41-yard scoring pass.
Will Marchbanks had 16 tackles for the Central Linn.
North Douglas hosts Riddle next Friday in a conference game.

RIDDLE — Oakridge’s Jake Boyd scored four touchdowns to lead the Warriors past the Irish in their Mountain View opener.
Boyd, a two-time state wrestling champion and all-state pitcher, rushed for two scores, passed for another and returned a 92-yard kickoff for a touchdown early in the second quarter. He also kicked three extra-point attempts.
Riddle starting quarterback Brock Goldbeck connected with brother Brodie on a 47-yard swing pass for a touchdown at the 11:48 mark in the second quarter.
The Irish lost three of their four fumbles and were docked 85 yards on 10 penalties, many of which coming during a 10-minute span in the first half, Riddle coach Russell Hobson said.
“We came out right away and gave up a couple turnovers that led to touchdowns,” Hobson said. “We were in a 13-0 hole right away. Overall, we made a lot of mental mistakes.”
The Irish (0-3) travel to North Douglas next Friday.

Yoncalla 0
MONROE — Yoncalla was shut out for a second straight week, this time against the Dragons in its Mountain View Conference opener.
Monroe scored 20 points in the fourth quarter to seal the win. Cody Stroda and Carlos Vazquez both ran for two touchdowns.
The Eagles managed just 66 net yards — including 62 rushing — and were issued 11 penalties for 80 yards, which Yoncalla coach J.J. Mast said were crippling.
“That is where we really shot ourselves in the foot,” Mast said. “We had touchdowns called back every single play over 25 yards. We had two scores called back.”
Chris Trevino led Yoncalla with four tackles for loss.
Yoncalla (1-2) hosts Glendale next Friday.
