BEAVERTON — The Roseburg High football team lost 32-28 to Aloha Friday night in yet another close game, dropping to 0-4 overall for the first time since 1971.

The Indians — who’ve lost three of their last four games by a combined 10 points — fell 23-21 to Gresham in their season opener and 38-34 to Beaverton last Friday. They lost 28-0 to McNary of Keizer in their home opener.

Roseburg was left with one last chance to score after Aloha sophomore tailback Johnathan Shaffer rushed for his second touchdown of the evening to give the Warriors (2-2 overall) a four-point advantage with 3:07 left in the game.

Josh Davis’ 32-yard catch from junior quarterback Thaddeus Davis put Roseburg in scoring position with 1:08 left, but Davis’ pass to Dakota Cavens on fourth-and-9 from the Aloha 13 was incomplete.

The winning score came after Roseburg failed to get a first down after going for it on fourth-and-six near midfield.

Thaddeus Davis finished 13-for-22 for 146 yards with one interception. He ran for 21 yards and a touchdown on five carries.

“It’s hard to put in words, to be honest with you,” Roseburg head coach Thurman Bell said. “It’s a little frustrating.

“We couldn’t finish it off. We had some bright spots, but gave up too many big plays (defensively).”

Joe Hennricks, who rushed for 92 yards on 16 carries for Roseburg, tied the game with a 2-yard run on a veer option play with 10:23 left in the second quarter. Lucas Walker’s successful point-after kick gave the Indians a 7-6 lead.

A determined running effort by Hennricks and Josh Weaver, who ran for 94 yards and a touchdown on 25 carries, culminated with Walker booting in a 35-yard field goal to give Roseburg a 10-6 lead with 35 seconds left in the second quarter.

Roseburg, coming off a strong ground assault against Beaverton, had another good day rushing. The Indians ran for 232 yards and three touchdowns on 48 carries.

“I thought our running game, with Weaver and Hennricks, ran awfully hard,” Bell said.

Aloha quarterback Joel Whitley slipped out of the pocket and found Kyle Johnson for a 40-yard touchdown pass with nine seconds remaining in the second quarter as the Warriors recaptured the lead at intermission.

“That deflated us a little bit going in at halftime, but we got back after it again and got the lead back (in the third quarter),” Bell said.

Mitch Huff made an interception to open the third quarter that helped set up Thaddeus Davis’ touchdown scamper on second-and-inches. Thaddeus Davis connected with Josh Davis in the endzone for a two-point conversion to give the Indians an 18-12 advantage.

Johnson picked off a pass from Davis that bounced off wide receiver Matt Thomson’s shoulder late in the third quarter, setting up a 23-yard touchdown heave from Whitley to Marcus Smith that gave Aloha a 19-18 lead after a successful kick.

Thaddeus Davis responded quickly with a long gain on a quarterback keeper to bring the Indians inside the red zone, and Weaver followed with a 1-yard scoring run. Cavens’ two-point conversion pass from Thaddeus Davis gave Roseburg a 26-19 advantage.

Wideout Jake Buchanan’s 26-yard touchdown reception from Whitley, combined with a successful extra-point try, evened the score two minutes into the fourth.

The Indians took a 28-26 on a safety with 7:34 to go when a high snap to Whitley slid through his hands and out of the end zone. Cavens’ deep punt inside the 5 helped set up Roseburg’s two-pointer.

Shaffer, who ran eight times for 120 yards, set himself up for a 10-yard rushing touchdown after bolting for 34 yards a play earlier with 3:07 left in the game, giving Aloha a 32-28 lead. The Warriors’ two-point conversion attempt failed.

Gabe Miles caught five passes for 44 yards for the Tribe.

The Indians host Forest Grove (3-1) next Friday at Finlay Field to conclude their non-league slate. They beat Mountain View (Wash.) 27-19 Friday, but lost 49-7 to McNary on Sept. 12.

“We’ll regroup on Monday, come out and keep playing hard,” Bell said. “Something’s got to go our way extremely quick.”

NOTES: Roseburg starting guard Seth Melvin, who’s been ill, didn’t play Friday. Jordan Guthrie, the other starting guard, suffered a neck injury in the second quarter and didn’t return.
