CRATER LAKE -- A Central Point man died late Saturday after two vehicles traveling in opposite directions simultaneously struck a cow in far eastern Douglas County.
Newton Rodney Wonacott, 51, was headed west on Highway 230 in a Buick sedan when he struck a cow that was walking across the road. At the same time, an eastbound Ford F-250 crew cab pickup driven by Aaron Platt, 28, of Redmond also hit the cow.
The vehicles did not strike each other. Wonacott's car went off the westbound shoulder and struck a tree, Oregon State Police said. The accident site is located northwest of Crate Lake, near Douglas County's borders with Klamath and Jackson counties.
Wonacott suffered fatal injuries. A passenger in his car, 80-year-old Ruby Wonacott of Medford, was also injured. She was taken by ambulance to Providence Medical Center in Medford.
Platt and his two passengers were not hurt, police said.
The area where the crash happened in considered "Open Range," giving livestock the right of way.
