Strickland: Two goals for Indians
EUGENE For a second straight game, the Roseburg boys soccer team beat its Southwest Conference opponent 5-0, this time whipping Sheldon on the road Saturday.
Steven Strickland and Brady Sherriff both scored two goals and Manny Mendoza added one for the Indians (8-3, 5-2 SWC).
The Indians, who outshot the Irish 14-5, only held a 1-0 lead at halftime after Mendoza opened the scoring in the 12th minute on an assist by Strickland.
Sherriff scored in the 42nd minute and Strickland found the back of the net on an assist by Lucas Walker a minute later.
Getting those two goals right out of the gate was huge, Roseburg coach Kevin Hunt said.
Strickland scored unassisted in the 72nd minute and Sherriff booted in a goal on an assist by Zach Eck in the 77th.
I think we have some guys that have been fighting some illness and for some reason the last couple days we have not been prepared to play, Hunt said. As a coach, you just hope they can fight through those things and I thought our kids did a good job of making those adjustments and gutting it out.
Goalkeeper Brandon Johnson made three saves for Roseburg, which playsat North Medford Tuesday.

Roseburg suffered its fifth one-goal loss of the season at Finlay Field. The Indians held the Southwest Conferences top offense at bay until the 62nd minute, when Bronte Jorgensen scored for Sheldon.
But the defensive effort was wasted as Roseburg (1-9-1, 1-6 Southwest Conference) couldnt mount an offensive attack, managing only two shots on goal.
The girls are trying to hang in there, but when you keep coming up short in games it takes a lot out of you emotionally, Roseburg coach Adam Blue said.
We played aggressively and that helps, but we couldnt get any shots going because wed pass too far or make bad touches and lose possession.
The Tribes best shot at a tying goal came in the closing minutes, as Chelsea Heberling, Shae Yuma and Hannah Russo came on a combo play. Yuma had the Irish keeper beat but shot wide of the far post. Goalkeeper Marah Baker made four saves for Roseburg.
The Indians play their final home game of the season Tuesday night against North Medford at Finlay Field. Roseburg travels to South Eugene next Saturday.
