RIDDLE While the skill players on the Riddle High football team have played musical chairs this season in order to fill holes and take advantage of matchups, one constant has been the offensive line.
The Irish controlled the line of scrimmage Friday night against Yoncalla, allowing a new backfield lineup to shine in a 30-12 win.
Brock Goldbeck ran for 135 yards and freshman Tylar Blansett threw a pair of touchdown passes as Riddle (1-5, 1-3 Mountain View Conference) racked up 294 yards of total offense.
The line of Daryn McNeil, Franco Moreno, Zack Reid, Eric Rice and Kyle Kremer paved the way for a 4.7-yard per carry average while defensively, the line held the Eagles (2-4, 1-3) to 16 yards on 21 carries.
It all came down to the offensive line, Riddle coach Russell Hobson said. They allowed us to run the ball all night.
Goldbeck played quarterback for most of last season and started this year at wide receiver before moving to running back. On only his second carry as starting running back, Goldbeck scored on a 29-yard TD run with 4:41 off the clock.
I think we had the right people in the right places to make big plays, Brock Goldbeck said. We finally got things together and did what we had to do for the win.
Blansett also made a fine debut in his position. After an incompletion on Riddles first drive, the freshman completed six straight attempts, including a 40-yard TD pass to Brodie Goldbeck and a 25-yarder to Brock as the Irish built an 18-0 lead in the first quarter.
For a freshman coming in he did a pretty good job, Hobson said. What we really needed Tylar to do was come in and distribute the ball to playmakers and he did.
Defensively, Riddles David Harris intercepted two passes and Blake Barron had a fumble recovery return for a touchdown called back by a penalty.
The Irish resurgence came at the worst possible time for Yoncalla, which started five sophomores and four freshmen in a lineup decimated by injuries. But despite missing quarterback Colton Kingery, running back Heath Anson and wide receiver Evan duBellier all preseason starters coach J.J. Mast refused to blame the loss on a thin lineup.
That made no difference, he said. We didnt execute plays. Riddle had the hunger and we didnt. When you dont have that hunger its difficult to win and when you add problems executing it makes it impossible.
Chris Trevino caught a pair of touchdown passes for the Eagles. The first came in the second quarter when Yoncalla recovered a fumble at the Riddle 16, but could only go three yards in three plays. On fourth down Kyle Arter found Trevino open running up the sideline to make it 18-6.
Yoncallas highlight of the night was a 42-yard halfback pass from freshman Tyler Ellis to Trevino for a TD early in the fourth quarter.
But the Irish had just added TD runs by Colton Hanson and Moreno and their running game showed no signs of letting up. The score might have been worse had the Eagles not forced six fumbles, recovering four of them, including one on their own goal line.
We had some hiccups, especially in the second quarter so we still have some work to do, Hobson said. Theyre a well-coached team, but pretty beat up. I think in two weeks when theyre healthy again youll see a different team.
The win snapped a nine-game losing streak for Riddle dating back to last September and extending into a tough schedule this season.
Its good to get everybody together, Goldbeck said. Nobody jumped on anyone if we made a mistake. We came out as a team and stuck with each other.
