As a breast cancer survivor, I would like to comment on the full page ad The News-Review ran on Oct. 13. The layout included many businesses and organizations who expressed their support for National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. One of the advertisements was submitted by Douglas County Right to Life. The text reads as follows: Abortion hurts women. Abortion May Raise risk of Breast Cancer. I am angered that this organization would insinuate that women who are diagnosed with this devastating disease may be at fault for something from their past.
The U.S. National Cancer Institute (more than 100 of the worlds leading experts) reviewed the link between pregnancy and breast cancer risk. Some of their findings were: 1. Breast cancer risk is increased for a short time after a full-term pregnancy (that is, a pregnancy that results in the birth of a living child). 2. Induced abortion is not linked to an increase in breast cancer risk. 3. Spontaneous abortion (miscarriage) is not linked to an increase in breast cancer risk. The American Cancer Society and other esteemed cancer research organizations agree with these findings.
Fearmongering is wrong, whether it is in national politics or local advertising. Women who are diagnosed with breast cancer must endure extremely difficult treatment. This disease affects their bodies, their emotions, their family and their finances. Many breast cancer patients cannot or will not make the effort to educate themselves about this disease. Douglas County Right to Life preys on their ignorance. This is disgusting and this is wrong. I encourage all breast cancer survivors to call this organization and express their feelings.
