Fall is definitely here. School is back in session and 4-H is gearing up for the first no-school day event on Veterans Day, Nov. 11. This is a great opportunity for families to head out to the Veterans Day parade to honor our veterans and then go to the 4-H Fall Fair. Yes, thats right, the fair!
This is an afternoon open to all fourth- through sixth-graders interested in learning more about the variety of free, hands-on projects available through 4-H. There are ten sessions being offered this year. These are Baking Basics, Leather Crafts, Creative Cards, Photography Frenzy, Forestry Fun, Wiggles and Wags, Magic of Electricity, Meet Mr. Roboto, Fantastic Fleece and Bead It. Kids will select four classes to attend and will learn skills and/or leave with a cool handmade item.
Children can learn how to bake a quick bread, stamping techniques, leather crafting skills, tree identification, how to use a camera correctly, fun ways to work with and train your pet dog, how to build a flashlight, sewing skills to create a hat and scarf, how to build a robot and braiding and beading techniques to make a key chain.
Parent workshops are also being offered at this years 4-H Fall Fair to allow parents to attend sessions while their children attend classes. This is a new addition to the Fall Fair.
Topics for adults are urban forestry and landscape sustainability. Urban forestry will cover topics about tree selection, tree health, pruning, maintenance of trees and how sidewalks, power lines and sewer lines affect tree health. This class will be taught by Steve Bowers, OSU Extension forestry agent.
The landscape sustainability class will discuss how to use a landscape sustainability worksheet. The worksheet is an educational tool to guide you through an analysis of your landscape and gardening practices. The class will take a look at water use, fertilization, pest control, design and other practices. If you can score more than 50 points on the worksheet, you can have an OSU Extension-certified Oregon landscape. This class will be taught by Steve Renquist, OSU Extension horticulture agent and the worksheets designer. The 4-H Fall Fair is being held from 1 to 5 p.m. Nov. 11 at the Wellspring Bible Fellowship Church, 2245 N.W. Kline St., Roseburg.
Come join us to learn more about 4-H and the OSU Extension Service. All around, this event is an inexpensive, fun way for your family to finish off Veterans Day. Participants in Fall Fair do not need to be involved in 4-H to attend. Registrations for both the parent and youth workshops will be accepted until Nov. 3 in the Extension Office, 1134 S.E. Douglas Ave., Roseburg.
