A fire burned about 20 acres of slash and small trees Sunday afternoon in the Cow Creek area, prompting officials to warn the public about fire safety during unseasonably warm weather.
The fire was spotted with a Douglas Forest Protective Association fire-detection camera at about 2:15 p.m. Three engines were dispatched, along with a bulldozer and a dozen firefighters, according to a DFPA press release.
Fire managers said the fire burned intensely due to the warm weather that also included low humidity. Firefighters planned to continue mopping up hot spots today to prevent flare-ups. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
DFPA officials remind the public that fire danger is still present. Every fire, whether a debris pile or a campfire, should be treated as if fire season were in effect, according to the press release.
Fires should never be started under windy conditions and water should always be nearby. Those conducting burns should stay with the fire until it is completely out.
