BOYS ATHLETE OF THE SEASON: North Douglas senior Jake Rice

POSITION: Running back, linebacker.

AGE: 17.

COLLEGE HOPES: Western Oregon University or Southern Oregon University to continue his athletic career.

GPA: 3.20.

OTHER INTERESTS: Wrestling, baseball, lifting weights.

FAVORITE ATHLETE: Jonathan Stewart, former Oregon running back and current Carolina Panther.

SEASON IN REVIEW: Selected co-defensive player of the year in the Mountain View Conference and was a first-team all-league pick at running back for the Warriors, who finished fourth in the MVC at 4-3 and went 6-3 overall for their first winning season since 2000. Finished with 1,256 yards rushing and 13 touchdowns on the season, running for 3,344 yards and making 116 tackles during his varsity career.

FAVORITE SPORTS MOMENT OF 2008: Rushing for 240 yards and two touchdowns in a 26-14 MVC win over Monroe on Oct. 3.

COACH’S COMMENT: “This year especially, he matured at the middle linebacker position and was the leader of the defense. He had the exceptional skill of being able to read the play and where it’s going.”
