Like others, I pay attention to gas prices and noticed something unsettling. Gas in Myrtle Point, Coquille, Reedsport and Elkton is lower than Roseburg. Prices in Coos Bay and North Bend are the same as Roseburg. As I recall, the argument is that gas in Coos Bay is lower because Coos Bay is closer to the pipeline. That sounds reasonable except, to my knowledge, no gas is off loaded at Coos Bay. Myrtle Point and Coquille gas was $2.09 while Roseburgs was $2.49. Myrtle Point and Coquille are closer to the coast, but not as close as Coos Bay. Maybe theres a tax base difference, but Coos Bay gas was $2.49, so thats not it.
Gas in Reedsport was $2.24. Could it be that Reedsport is closer to the main pipe line? Elkton was $2.29 at their only station, so supply and demand cannot be an issue and its further from the pipe line, and gas along the freeway in Sutherlin was at $2.39.
Theres a common denominator here, but I cannot put my finger on it. If its not the pipeline or tax base causing this large gap in prices, could the culprit be supply and demand and competition or lack of it? Price fixing seems like it would be illegal, but that does not sound like the fine upstanding gas distributors around this area.
I sure wish I could figure out why others are selling for far less than we are and still making a profit. Ah, I know what it is, the good people of Roseburg are just so wealthy and kind they demand to pay the high prices. Yeah, that has got to be it. Its the fault of the fine upstanding and rich populace of Roseburg.
