William (Bill) Dietrich was born July 13,1912, in Calistoga, California. He died peacefully at his home in Glide, Oregon, on Friday, November 28, 2008. During his childhood, Bills parents moved to the Pacific Northwest. His teen and early adult life was spent in Trout Lake, Washington. Bill married his sweetheart, Lorena May Updegrave on May 30, 1941, in Medford, Oregon. The couple lived in Fort Klamath, Oregon, before moving to Glide in 1943. Bill found employment in various farm and timber related jobs before becoming a partner in a Glide mill operated as Updegrave and Sons. In 1950 he established his own business, Dietrich Logging Company, which he operated until his retirement. His 96 years of life were filled with many interests; travel (especially to Switzerland), gardening (sharing blueberries, grapes, corn and melons with friends and neighbors), family gatherings, reading and traveling to historical sites, and serving his church family. Bill was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, worshiping at the Glide church for the past 30 years.
Bill is survived by his sons and their wives, Doug and Carol of Glide; Richard and Marlene of Portland Oregon; Bruce and Dolly of Mt. Vernon, Washington. There are also five grandsons, two great-granddaughters and two great-grandsons. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lorena, 2004 and son, Burton, 1967.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, December 13, 2008, at 2 p.m. in the Glide Seventh-day Adventist Church, 19085 N. Umpqua Hwy. All are welcome. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial gifts be sent to Project PATCH (Planned Assistance for Troubled Children). 2404 E. Mill Blvd, Suite A. Vancouver, Washington, 98661.
