November 2, 1930 - December 15, 2008
Passed to her rest surrounded by all her loving family members at home on Monday, December 15, 2008, after a two year struggle to survive. She was diagnosed in December 2006 with a rare and aggressive form of ovarian cancer.
Joanne was the firstborn child of Fred and Genevieve Jan Wheeler in the Bell Gardens District of Los Angeles, California, on November 2, 1930. Her early years of schooling took place at Pacoima, Van Nuys and Glendale, California. When she was 15 years of age her family moved to Southern Oregon and Joanne finished her high school education at Rogue River Academy in 1948. After attending one year at Walla Walla College in Washington, she found work at the St. Helena, California, hospital as a secretary , which vocation she followed during most of her working years.
In 1950, Joanne was married to Duane M. Corwin who became a minister evangelist after his graduation from Pacific Union College in 1952. As a pastors wife she assisted her husband in his work in that role for 42 years in Oregon, Washington and California, and short term mission trips to other countries. Joanne also became a licensed real estate agent for a time. Her last remunerative job which she greatly enjoyed was as a family service consultant for a cemetery and funeral chapel business at Pleasant Hills, California. Her compassion and caring provided many people with peace and comfort in their difficult time.
After their retirement Joanne and Duane moved to Roseburg, Oregon, in 2004, so she could be nearby to help her aged parents. She visited her mother daily at the Rose Haven Nursing Home until Jans death in December, 2007.
Joanne was baptized as a Seventh-day-Adventist Christian at 12 years of age and remained a faithful and caring member of the church throughout her life.
Joanne was a very thoughtful and loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend, besides being a helper to many others in their life journeys. She found great joy in planning many family gatherings during the years, and loved people, traveling, reading, good music and sharing her faith with others. She brought a ray of sunshine into the lives of everyone she met and will be missed very much.
Joanne is survived by her husband, Duane Corwin of Roseburg; a daughter, Duanna and Harold Richards of Auburn, Washington; a son, Daryl Corwin of Roseburg; a daughter, Lonna and Mike Montgomery of Bend, Oregon; a brother, Dick and Mike Wheeler of Enterprise, Oregon; a brother, Phil and Laurel (her personal nurse at home) Sieck of Roseburg; step-father, Charles Bill Sieck of Roseburg; two granddaughters, Brittany and Leah, and two grandsons, Brandon and Drew as well as many other family members who loved her dearly.
Joanne was preceded in death by her father, Fred Wheeler and her mother, Jan Sieck.
A memorial service for Joanne will be held at the Roseburg Seventh-day Adventist Church at 2 p.m. on December 27, 2008, at 1109 NW. Garden Valley Blvd. Memorial gifts in her honor may be sent to Adventist Frontier Missions, Palawano Philippines Project, PO Box 286, Berrian Springs, Michigan, 49103 or via www.afmonline.org.
