Of Central Ave. died at 1:50 p.m. on Saturday, December 27, 2008, at her home. She was born on July 27,1921, in Omaha, Nebraska, the daughter of the late Guy and Helen (Turkington) Rosecrans. She moved with her family to Hillsboro, Oregon, in 1936 and graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1939. She began working at the Hillsboro Argus Newspaper in 1942 and continued working there off and on until 1965. She attended the Pacific University in Forest Grove, Oregon, where she was a member and past president of the Theta Nu Alpha sorority. She was also the editor of the Pacific Magazine and the campus newspaper; The Pacific University Index. On April 13, 1943, she married Jerald D. Straughan the son of the late Earl and Marie Straughan of Hillsboro by Dr. Walter Giersbach, the president of Pacific University. Betty joined her husband at Hobbs, New Mexico, where Jerry was stationed with the U.S. Army Air Corps Flying B-l7's. Betty became a reporter for the Hobbs Daily News-Sun and wrote oil news for the Associated Press- Following the war they returned to the Hillsboro area until 1965 when they moved to Roseburg, Oregon. Betty was a reporter and editor for the News Review for 19 years. For many years she wrote speeches for the Chamber of Commerce First Citizen's Banquet She was a past president of the Newcomers Club, on the Salvation Armys advisory board for 20 years. A member of the National and Oregon Press Women for 45 years and was a charter member of the National Food Editors and Writers Association. Betty was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Roseburg. In July of 2002, Betty and Jerry moved to Columbus, Indiana, to live near their daughter, Julie Humphrey and her family. A memorial service celebrating the life of Mrs. Straughan will be conducted at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, at the Memorial Baptist Church with Mrs. Straughans family presiding over the service sharing their memories. Visitation will be at the church from 6 p.m. until the time of the service at 7 p.m. on Tuesday. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorial contributions to the Salvation Army. She is survived by her daughter, Julie (Jim) Humphrey of Columbus; a son, Jerald "Mike" (Joan) Straughan of Clackamas, Oregon; three grandchildren; Jenny (Harvey) Taylor; John (Shannon) Humphrey, and Jeri Ann (John) Anderson all of Columbus; three great -grandchildren, BIaine and Morgan Humphrey and Samuel Taylor all of Columbus; two step-children, Dawn Straughan and Jeremy Pasko both of Portland, Oregon, and two step-great -grandchildren, Emily and Terrence of Portland, Oregon. www.mem.com
