BOYS BASKETBALL: Days Creek, Elkton win; Roseburg, Oakland, Reedsport, North Douglas, Yoncalla, UVC lose

SATURDAY'S RESULTS

Hillsboro 61

Roseburg 56

HILLSBORO — Brady Sherriff scored 17 points, Bradley Seehawer hit two crucial three-point field goals down the stretch and the Roseburg boys nearly rallied from a 15-point deficit before falling short.

Seehawer, who finished with 14 points and four treys, hit back-to-back threes with less than two minutes remaining to cut the Indians’ deficit to three points. But his final attempt from behind the arc with 30 seconds to go was off and the Indians missed a backdoor lay-up with a few seconds remaining.

Roseburg played without guard Manny Mendoza, who missed the game for family reasons.

“I thought the kids did a really good job of battling back,” RHS coach Craig Stinnett said. “Being short handed, I thought the kids played really well. It was good for us to go through that adversity and for them to bounce back and respond.”

The Indians were tied 9-9 at one point in the first quarter before falling behind 21-10. Hillsboro led 30-26 at halftime. Josh Malone finished with 11 points and Austin Gregg added 10 rebounds. Charles Mosley paced the Spartans (7-3) with 15.

The Indians (2-7) kick off their Southwest Conference season by hosting North Medford at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Western Mennonite 59

Oakland 36

SALEM — No. 1-ranked Western Mennonite lived up to its billing, shooting 45 percent from the floor, including seven 3-point shots in a win over Oakland.

Tayler Branch led the Pioneers (7-0) with 17 points. Jared Garza had 14 points and Lewis Menges added 11.

“They’re a really talented team and are ranked No. 1 for a reason,” Oakland coach Jeff Clark said. “In the second quarter we missed a lot of easy shots we needed to make and they didn’t miss their’s. You can’t shoot 30 percent on the road and expect to win.”

Tyler Fugate led Oakland with 12 points and Jason Derby had eight.

Rogue River 66

Reedsport 60

ROGUE RIVER — Despite a 30-point performance by Ismael Osorio, the Braves came up empty-handed against Rogue River.

Days Creek 66

Mohawk 43

DAYS CREEK — Tyler Hays scored 17 points and Bryar Zimmerman had 15 points and 11 rebounds as Days Creek won a non-league game against perennial 1A power Mohawk.

Travis Fuller scored 10 points and dished out eight assists for the Wolves (6-2).

C.J. Vian led the Indians with 14 points.

Thurston JV 70

North Douglas 35

SPRINGFIELD — North Douglas’ Cameron Derrick scored 11 points in a losing effort. The Warriors (1-8) host Elkton at 7:30 p.m. Monday.

Elkton 53

Yoncalla 41

ELKTON — The Elks used a strong fourth quarter to grind out a win over North County rival Yoncalla.

Mario Celis scored 14 points and Noah Miller had 13 points and 10 rebounds to lead Elkton (7-1), which trailed 34-32 going into the final period. Mackenzie Smith added eight assists, seven rebounds and eight points.

Colton Kingery and Tyler Graham each had 10 points for Yoncalla.

Elkton travels to North Douglas on Monday while the Eagles open Mountain View Conference play Thursday against Glendale.

St. Mary’s 42

UVC 40

MEDFORD — Si Boggess’ basket at the buzzer, following a turnover by the Monarchs, lifted the 2A Crusaders to the non-league win.

Umpqua Valley Christian (7-3), which blew a 13-point halftime lead, got 22 points from senior post Ryan Graf. Lou Gambee led St. Mary’s, which tied up the contest with eight seconds left, with 11 points.

“A tough loss,” surmised UVC coach Jeff Fusco. “We were a little tired (coming off a loss to Sutherlin Friday) and made some uncharacteristic mistakes. We played extremely well in the first quarter, but they hit some big shots in the fourth quarter.”
