SUTHERLIN The top-ranked Sutherlin High girls basketball team appears ready for Far West League play after going unbeaten in eight non-league games.
The Bulldogs defending Class 4A state champions defeated another top 10 team Saturday night, defeating No. 7 Junction City 46-30 in the Sutherlin gym for their 22nd straight win dating back to last season.
This (schedule) is exactly what we needed ... I think the girls are pretty happy to get through this part of the season, said Sutherlin coach Josh Grotting. We survived it and its a testament to their character. We played pretty darn well tonight, but still couldve played better.

Senior wing Tess Bennett led the Bulldogs with 20 points, 11 coming in the second quarter. Senior post Destiny Cowan added 15 points for Sutherlin, which led 24-14 at halftime. Sutherlin was without starting guard Heather Weber, a senior who was resting a sore ankle. Senior post Amanda Hutchings picked up two quick fouls and sat out most of the first half.
We focused on getting a good start and thats what the girls did, Grotting said. We did a good job of moving the ball around and Tess came out on fire, and Destiny (Cowan) did a great job down low. Her (offense) has been huge for us.
The Bulldogs limited the Tigers, a member of the Sky-Em League, to 11 field goals and seven free throws. Junction City is guided by Craig Lannom, a former Glendale coach.
We played all man-to-man tonight and it was a much better defensive game for us, Grotting said. Jaqui Gilman did a great job and created a couple of turnovers for us.
Bennett and Brooklyn Norman made 3-point field goals. Emilie Svingen had 11 points for the Tigers.
The Bulldogs will host Siuslaw of Florence on Tuesday in their league opener. In other Far West openers, Douglas will travel to North Bend and Brookings-Harbor will visit South Umpqua.
