As the investigation into Saturday’s four-vehicle fatal crash on Highway 38 continues, some victims remained hospitalized this morning.
One person died in the crash that occurred at about 2:45 p.m. near Milepost 20 east of Scottsburg. Police believe they know the identity of the female victim, who was driving a car that burst into flames when it crashed, but are waiting for confirmation to release the name, said Sgt. John Keeler with the Oregon State Police office in Coos Bay.
“We’re waiting for the medical examiner’s determination of that,” he said.
Police say a Toyota Sequoia driven by John Flaxel, 72, of Coos Bay was westbound when it crossed the center line and sideswiped a Ford F-150 pickup. The Sequoia continued into the eastbound lane where it collided head-on with a second vehicle that left the highway and caught fire. At the scene Saturday, officials said the vehicle appeared to be a Volkswagen Jetta.
The driver of the charred vehicle died at the scene. Keeler said a medical examiner will also determine a cause of death.
The driver of a third eastbound vehicle, a Chrysler minivan, saw the collision and swerved to avoid the Sequoia, according to an OSP press release. The minivan came to a rest in a ditch off the highway, while the pickup landed on its top in the middle of the road.
Flaxel was taken to Lower Umpqua Hospital in Reedsport where it was determined he suffered from internal bleeding. He was flown to Sacred Hearth Medical Center at RiverBend in Springfield and was listed in fair condition this morning, a hospital spokeswoman said.
His wife, Joy Flaxel, age unknown, was also flown to Sacred Heart. She was listed in serious condition in the intensive care unit.
Police say the driver of the pickup, Konrad W. Kennelly, 50, and his passenger, Martha Xitco, 50, both of Port Angeles, Wash., suffered minor injuries and were taken by ambulance to Lower Umpqua. The driver of the minivan, Shirley A. Powell, 59, of Sutherlin and her husband, Evert Powell, 59, were also taken to the Reedsport hospital with minor injuries.
Their conditions were not available this morning.
State police from Coos Bay are handling the investigation into the crash, which closed the highway for about three hours before one lane was opened. A crash reconstructionist from the Roseburg OSP office is assisting.
Officials with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, Elkton Fire Department, Scottsburg Fire Department and the Oregon Department of Transportation also helped at the scene.
