Roseburg's lead evaporates in loss to Sheldon

The Roseburg High girls basketball team got the start it wanted. Unfortunately, the Indians couldn’t finish what they started.

After taking an eight-point lead after one quarter, the Tribe only managed 14 points over the next three periods and dropped a 42-26 decision to Sheldon Tuesday night in a Southwest Conference game at Robertson Memorial Gym.

“It’s frustrating ... we need to play four straight quarters and haven’t put it together,” said Marah Baker, the lone senior on Roseburg’s roster. “That was definitely a game we could’ve won if we’d kept our rhythm. We were rushing and didn’t make the right choices, and that’s what got them ahead.”

The Indians (0-10, 0-4 SWC) got six points from Courtney Hutchins and four from Kelsey Pardon in the first quarter en route to a 12-4 advantage. A 3-point field goal by Pardon with 6:11 remaining in the sccond period gave Roseburg its biggest lead at 15-6.

Then the Tribe went scoreless for over 10 minutes, and Tami Brown capped a 13-0 run by the Irish (5-7, 2-2) with a 3-pointer to make it 19-15. A pair of treys by Hutchins — the game’s top scorer with 14 points — cut the deficit to 23-21 with 1:03 left in the third.

Then Sheldon sealed the deal by scoring 15 unanswered points. Alisen Hinton hit a pair of 3s and Amy Froehlich contributed five points for the Irish during the spurt.

“(The first quarter) was very exciting,” Baker said. “We were fired up. We were breaking their press and getting the ball downcourt without making turnovers. Then we started making some dumb turnovers.”

“Our girls were prepared for them, and we were pretty sharp and executed well (in the first quarter),” said Roseburg coach Jeff Thomas, calling it one of his team’s best quarters of the season. “But we can’t afford to have any lapses out there. We have to find a way where we don’t go through scoring droughts.

“I’m proud of the effort our girls gave. We played hard and we’ll keep stressing the importance of taking care of the ball.”

Andrea Anderson, a 6-foot senior post, led the Irish with 12 points and six rebounds. Brown, a 6-1 senior who made second-team all-conference last season, didn’t play in the first half in what Sheldon coach Luke Roth called a “coach’s decision.”

“We played better defensively and took care of the ball better in the second half,” Roth said. “We had eight turnovers in the first quarter. Roseburg played very hard and desperately wanted a win.”

The Indians shot 24 percent (9-for-37) from the field and 40 percent (4-for-10) from the line. Roseburg played its second straight game without sophomore post Brynna Bilton-Smith, who’s sidelined for a couple of weeks with a health issue.

“They were good shots, but just weren’t falling,” Baker said.

Roseburg resumes conference play Friday at unbeaten South Eugene, which is ranked No. 3 in the Class 6A coaches’ poll.

EUGENE — Sheldon’s Tyler Reynolds scored a game-high 17 points to lead the Irish past Roseburg in a Southwest Conference contest that was close until the game’s final five minutes.

Josh Malone recorded a team-high 14 points and sophomore Bradley Seehawer added 13 for the Indians, who tied the game at 49 with about five minutes to go. Roseburg attempted just three foul shots and was forced to send Sheldon to the free-throw line down the stretch. The Irish were 14-of-22 at the charity stripe on the night.

Malone and Brady Sherriff, who scored eight points, both ran into early foul trouble.

“Really you always have to go to the other team’s place and play at least 10 points better,” Roseburg coach Craig Stinnett said. “It’s frustrating.”

The Indians (2-10, 0-3 SWC), who shot 56 percent on the night, host South Eugene at 7 p.m. Friday.
