Marah Baker wanted badly to go out with a win in her final home game in a Roseburg High girls basketball uniform on Tuesday night at Robertson Memorial Gym.

The 5-foot-6 guard — the lone senior for the Indians — staked her team to an early lead over Sheldon, scoring 11 of Roseburg’s first 13 points. But none of her teammates were able to step up offensively as Sheldon shut down Baker the remainder of the game and went on to post a 60-28 Southwest Conference victory.

Andrea Anderson, a 6-foot senior post, scored 13 of her game-high 16 points in the second half, grabbed 11 rebounds and blocked four shots for the Irish (12-10, 9-5 SWC). Sophomore wing Chloe Stiles had 12 of her 13 points in the first half, hitting four 3-point field goals to help Sheldon to a five-point lead at the break.

The Indians (0-20, 0-14) were only down nine points after Kelsey Pardon converted a 3-pointer with 7:36 left in the contest, but the Irish outscored Roseburg 25-2 over the final seven minutes to turn it into a rout.

Roseburg’s season-long problems — poor shooting and turnovers — continued. The Tribe shot only 21 percent (8-for-38) from the field and didn’t take care of the ball against Sheldon’s pressure following a solid opening quarter.

“We did what we wanted as far as our game plan, but you make it tough on yourself when you have trouble scoring,” said Roseburg coach Jeff Thomas. “We got a lot of good looks the whole game, but couldn’t put them down. Sheldon did their best to take Marah (Baker) out of the game and things got away from us in the fourth quarter.”

The Irish came out lethargic and appeared ripe to be upset. The Indians were optimistic after Baker tossed in a 3-pointer at the end of the first period to give her club an 11-9 advantage.

“We were playing good defense and making shots ... I felt we can do this, that team (Sheldon) is beatable and I think everyone else had the same feeling,” Baker said. “We played pretty hard and put everything out there on the floor.”

Courtney Hutchins and Pardon each grabbed six rebounds for Roseburg, which concludes its season Thursday at second-ranked South Eugene.
