Since 2002 Douglas County has had the privilege of having the Umpqua Reading Council and Altrusa sponsor the Celebration of Literacy. The purpose of this event is to provide a countywide motivational reading program. The Celebration of Literacy is a two-week immersion into reading and reading-related activities throughout Douglas County, with an emphasis on childrens activities. These activities include events such as the Battle of the Books, a Reading Fair, Rollin for Reading Skate Night, Valentines for Vets, poster contests, various school activities, and much more. For many years the Extension Service 4-H Teen Leadership Team has hosted a booth at the Reading Fair, and this year the new Extension Service Family and Consumer Development Agent was present to introduce our additional programs. This will also be the first year 4-H is partnering with Roseburg High School to sponsor the Battle of the Books competition for Douglas County.
4-H is excited about these opportunities because the goal of the Celebration of Literacy is to show the public that reading is the foundation to learning and crucial for future success. Events will demonstrate that reading can entertain as well as inform. Like the 4-H program, this opportunity believes in learn by doing and providing the community with educational opportunities to prepare local youth for future success.
Each year our Teen Leadership Team looks forward to the Reading Fair and the opportunity to entertain students by getting them excited about reading, and by informing parents of additional opportunities available through 4-H. This event was hosted Saturday at the Boys and Girls Club. This year the teens were able to present information on our new Clover Buds program, which caters to students from kindergarten through third grade.
Along with the Clover Buds program, Douglas County 4-H has also taken on a new component of school enrichment. This year we will be partnering with Roseburg High School to host the Battle of the Books competition held at the high school next Saturday. This activity, like many 4-H events, challenges youth individually and as a team on their skills and knowledge. This competition is much like a sports tournament; however, it tests mental proficiency rather than physical ability. Youth come from all over Douglas County to participate in this event and represent their schools. It is an honor to be a part of a school team, and earn the privilege of continuing on to the state tournament.
Not only is this a great event for youth, but its also a great opportunity for the community to pull together to host this educational event. At least 32 sponsors have provided donations, financial assistance or event services to ensure that Douglas County can offer this unique opportunity to the youth of our community.
