Roseburgs Jacob Eibel serves against Sheldon during a singles match on Thursday at Hoffman Tennis Center in Roseburg. Eibel won the match.
The homemade cookie in Jacob Eibels hand didnt stand a chance.
After Eibel, Roseburg Highs top singles player, edged Sheldons Connor OBrien 10-7 in a weather-forced 10-point tiebreaker, the transfer from Blanchet Catholic seemed just as happy to devour the treat teammate Patrick Foley gave him as he was with the victory at Hoffman Tennis Center Thursday.
It was a very satisfying win, said the sophomore, whose family moved from Salem to Roseburg two weeks before school began. Especially when you get a cookie at the end.
Perhaps just as sweet as helping the Indians blank the Irish 8-0 and emerge victorious from their Southwest Conference opener was the fact that Eibel didnt have to share his snack.
After all, he has four hungry 11-year-old siblings who were born one minute apart. Brothers Cole, Lucas and Mitchell and sister Alexis the Eibel quadruplets keep things interesting.
It wasnt quite a fun childhood, especially when we didnt have our room additions added on, the 16-year-old Jacob joked, adding that their new home is much more accommodating.
Eibel pulled out Roseburgs closest and longest match of the day. Down a set but leading 4-2 in the second, he had to wrap up his match on an indoor court after rain refused to give in. To speed the match up, the 10-point tiebreaker was used, and Eibel eked out the thriller.
Jacobs played year round, Roseburg coach Eric Ball said. Hes made huge improvements.
Roseburgs top two doubles pairings both secured straight-set victories. Sophomores Matt Bruns and Patrick Foley beat Geoff Yoon and Hurley Turner 6-2, 6-3, propelling their season record to 5-0.
Bruns and Foley, whove been building off a successful freshmen campaign together, pulled away by holding serve as the matchs rhythm picked up.
That helps you mentally, Bruns said.
Meanwhile, No. 1 doubles partners Shea Wetherell and Alec Kagele faced a 4-1 first-set deficit before rebounding to win, 6-4, 6-3.
(The comeback) just had to start with the serving, said Wetherell, whos 4-1 with Kagele. We had to get our serves in. We had a problem with that early, and once they started landing, we got it.
No. 2 singles player Charles Davis put the hurt on Luke Steele, who led by a point late in their first-set tiebreaker before double-faulting. His opponent frazzled, Davis turned up the heat in the second set.
I gained confidence, Davis said. He wasnt lobbing much, so I was able to come to the net.
Peyton Carey won 6-2, 6-1 to improve his record to 4-1. Thaddeus Davis needed an indoor court to prevail in three, winning 2-6, 6-2, 6-0.
No. 3 doubles partners Jadon Morse and Dylan Wilson won easily and the No. 4 pairing of Cody Chasteen and Kory Kast bounced back from a first-set loss for a victory.
The kids have been playing better and better every single match and today was no exception, Ball said.
