Residents can help feed the hungry by taking part in The National Association of Letter Carriers annual Stamp Out Hunger! food drive SaturdayKathy Korengel 5/1/09 May 9. In its 17th year, its the nations largest single-day food drive. Letter carriers have collected more than 909 million pounds of food since its inception.
This year, letter carriers in the cities of Roseburg, Glide/Idleyld Park, Glendale, Sutherlin and Winston are taking part. All the offices are delivering postcards to remind their customers of the event and some are providing customers plastic bags.
To take part, postal customers need to leave donations of non-perishable food, such as canned food or pasta and rice, in sturdy bags next to their mailbox before the time of their regular mail delivery. Those who dont have a mailbox may leave items on their front porch.
Letter carriers then will pick up the items and help deliver them to local food banks. Several volunteer groups will help collect and distribute the food. The food collected stays within that community and goes to a local food bank.
Boy Scout Troop 46 will help unload trucks, sort and package food at the Umpqua Community Action Networks Food Bank. U.S. Forest Service employees are helping out in the Glide and Idleyld Park areas. The Retired Senior Volunteer Program organized volunteers from Vietnam Veterans of America Post 805 to help Sutherlin, Winston and Glendale carriers. In Roseburg offices, retirees, postal employees and their families will collect and distribute food.
This years food drive is sponsored by the Campbell Soup Co., the U.S. Postal Service, Feeding America, Valpak, AFL-CIO and the United Way of America.
The Campbell Soup Co. will donate 1 million pounds of food and send postcards to 120 million homes to remind people of the food drive.
