Are you looking for a fun, educational and memorable opportunity for your child to participate in this summer? Then the Douglas County 4-H Camp experience is perfect! The Douglas County 4-H program is hosting an overnight summer camp open to youth in fourth to sixth grades.

4-H Camp is a weeklong outdoor recreational and educational camp. Camp will be held June 22 to 26 at the Oregon 4-H Center in Salem.

This camping facility is one of the best in the state and provides many opportunities for campers to gain a very rich and rewarding camp experience. Our camp will be able to accommodate 80 campers and 30 staff.

More than 20 counselors are on board to assist us in the ultimate camp experience for the youth participants. Counselors are responsible 4-H teens who have been going through extensive counselor training sessions and are committed to creating fun and safe lifetime memories and experiences for campers.

The 2009 camp theme is International Adventures. This theme has inspired the counselors and staff to plan exciting activities and fun ways to decorate, but they have also seen an opportunity to teach the youth about people and cultures from around the world.

This year’s current theme is very exciting, but the traditional 4-H camp offerings will remain: archery, swimming, hiking, arts/crafts, campfires, skits and songs.

The 4-H Center in Salem also provides us with even more opportunities such as fishing and canoeing. This is one fun-filled week with many chances to make new friends, participate in fun activities, and learn about the world and cultures around us.

We know it is a long drive, so we are providing busing for youth from Roseburg June 22, and will have the kids back to Roseburg on June 26. Registration is open to youth who have just completed the fourth, fifth, or sixth grades, and campers do not need to be 4-H members to attend.

The total camper cost is $250; however, due to generous donations from organizations such as the Douglas County 4-H Leaders Association, campers are only required to pay $135 each ($136 for non 4-H members to purchase insurance).

If you are interested in exploring the Oregon 4-H Center facility, go to http://www.oregon4hcenter.org/. There is limited space, so act soon. Completed registration forms must be at the Douglas County OSU Extension Office by June 1.
