Coast celebrates vets over holiday

This Memorial Day, the Reedsport-Winchester Bay Chamber of Commerce is hosting a celebration to honor veterans “Past, Present & Future.”

The celebration begins at 4 p.m. May 24 with a community barbecue at Reedsport High School, hosted by the Military Order of the Purple Heart. The barbecue will be followed by a free concert by the Marine Corps Band at 7 p.m. in the RHS Pacific Auditorium, 2260 Longwood Drive.

Tickets to the concert are required due to the limited number of seats, and are available at Umpqua Bank, Bank of America and the chamber office.

Activities on Memorial Day begin at 10 a.m. with a kids amusement area across from Hahn Park, including a 30-foot slide, bounce house, carnival games, helicopter rides and an ice cream truck.

A Memorial Day parade through downtown Reedsport begins at noon. Businesses, civic organizations and individuals are encouraged to participate in the parade and can pick up entry forms at the chamber office.

At 1:30 p.m. a memorial service featuring the 29 Palms Marine Corps Band, The Special Forces Association Parachute Team and aircraft flybys will begin.

On May 26, two free concerts will be performed in Winchester Bay by the Marine Corps Band. One performance will be at noon at Jason Boe Memorial Park and the other at 6 p.m. in front of Sportsmen’s Cannery & Smokehouse.

The committee is accepting donations to help pay for the cost of transportation, lodging and meals for members of the band and parachute team. Donations can be made at Umpqua Bank, Bank of America or the chamber office.

Information: Reedsport-Winchester Bay Chamber of Commerce, 271-3495.
