Passed peacefully away on Wednesday, May 13, 2009, at the age of 83. He was born on April 20, 1926, in Emily, Minnesota, to parents, Frank Alvah and Ethel Rose (Atwater) Andrews. After graduating high school Vernon proudly served our country in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He was very proud to have served on the USS Smith. After the war he was united in marriage to the love of his life Florette Elizabeth Robinson on September 15, 1954. The two enjoyed 51 years of happily married life. He retired from the California Department of Transportation. Vernon is survived by his children, Jack Hurst and his wife, Betty of Fortuna, California; Barbara McKay and her husband, Bob of Gasquet, California; Doris McKay of Fort Dick, California; Donald Hurst and his wife, Lawanda of Cave Junction, Oregon; sister, Rae Stevens of Roseburg; sister-in-law, Mabel Andrews of Lake Elsinore, California, and a special friend, Tony Schornstein of Myrtle Creek, Oregon. As well as numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Florette and a son, Verden Hurst. Vernon was a long standing member of the Seventh day Adventist Church in Crescent City, California, Cave Junction, Oregon and Myrtle Creek, Oregon. Funeral services will be held on Monday, May 18, 2009, at 1 p.m. at the VA National Cemetery in Roseburg, Oregon. Officiating will be Pastor Charles Disney. Military Rites will be offered by the VFW District Twelve Honor Guard. Immediately following the services a memorial reception will be held at the Seventh day Adventist Church in Myrtle Creek. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Roseburg VA Hospital-Volunteer services. Arrangements are under the direction of Taylor's Family Chapel.
