Memorial Day activities planned

In honor of Memorial Day, groups across the county are holding activities and tributes to soldiers throughout the long weekend.

Three days of activities are scheduled for the Reedsport/Winchester Bay area, a golf fundraiser is taking place in Sutherlin, county soldiers will be honored in a tribute in Roseburg and a flyover will occur in Glide.

Below is a roundup of Memorial Day activities in Douglas County.

Sunday

• Memorial Day barbecue and concert — 4 p.m. barbecue, 7 p.m. concert, Reedsport High School, 2260 Longwood Drive, Reedsport. Free concert by Marine Corps Band. Tickets required and are available at Umpqua Bank, Bank of America and the Reedsport-Winchester Bay Chamber of Commerce office. 271-3495.

Monday

• Golfing for the Guard — 8 a.m. Memorial Day tribute, all-day golfing, Umpqua Golf Resort, 1919 Recreation Lane, Sutherlin. Cost is $25 for 18 holes. Green fees go to Roseburg Veteran Bass Masters charity account to benefit local soldiers in financial need. Memorial Day tribute includes names and photos of Oregon’s soldiers, sailors and Marines who died in Iraq and Afghanistan. Registration not required. Umpqua Golf Resort, 459-4422.

• Reedsport Memorial Day celebration — 10 a.m. kids amusement area opens at Hahn Park; noon, parade through downtown Reedsport; 1:30 p.m. memorial service at Hahn Park. Kids area includes slide, bounce house, carnival games and helicopter rides. Reedsport-Winchester Bay Chamber of Commerce, 271-3495.

• Memorial Day tribute — 11 a.m., Roseburg Veterans Affairs National Cemetery, 1170 W. Harvard Ave., Roseburg. Douglas County Veterans Forum event to honor current soldiers and veterans. 459-1512 or 679-5030.

• Glide Veterans Memorial Flyover — 2:15 p.m., Glide Veterans Memorial, 20062 North Umpqua Highway, next to the Glide Community Building. Memorial to honor veterans of U.S. Armed Forces and those currently serving. Event will include refreshments and special music. 957-8203.

Tuesday

• Winchester Bay concerts — noon, Jason Boe Memorial Park; 6 p.m., Sportsmen’s Cannery & Smokehouse, Winchester Bay. Free concerts by Marine Corps Band. Reedsport-Winchester Bay Chamber of Commerce, 271-3495.
