South's Jordan Fugate (5), of La Pine, slides in safely at third base ahead of the tag of North's Taylor Taft, of Gladstone, in the third inning of the first game of the Sterling Savings 4A All-Star Series at Legion Field on Saturday night.

Through most of Saturday's three-hour Sterling Savings 4A North/South All-Star game, the bend-but-don't-break policy was in effect for both squads.
Time and time again, pitchers—starters, relievers, and closers alike—would dig themselves into a 3-0, bases-loaded hole before throwing three strikes or inducing a groundout to end the inning.
It wasn't pretty, but when the fat lady sang the North All-Stars bent a little less, to the tune of a 12-8 victory over their South-state rivals.
But, hey, its an All-Star game.
“It's a great honor to be here,” lone-Douglas County All-Star Bryson Norton of Douglas said. “We're still trying to figure each other out. But we'll put it together for the doubleheader tomorrow.”
The North—with representatives from Cascade High School, Philomath, Stayton, Central, Gladstone, North Marion, Astoria, Newport, Seaside, and La Salle—had star power aplenty with starting pitcher Cody Dordan, a Newport product who was drafted by the Minneapolis Twins. The future pro picked up the unconventional win by throwing only four innings, but struggled to find a rhythm on his way to six walked batters.
The starter for South, co-Most Valuable Player in 4A baseball Bryce Weidman, had the same predicament. The North Bend graduate walked two and gave up six hits.
It was the same story for each hurler who toed the rubber Saturday. The game saw 16 walks, five hit batters, and three wild pitches.
To be fair, the state's best batters were filling the box. But even the sluggers' numbers didn't reflect their gaudy regular-season stats.
Mason Larkins of Gladstone was the only Northerner stroke at least two hits, going 2-for-3 with one RBI. South had two players get muliple hits, Ryan Hayden of Hidden Valley—3-for-5, a homerun, two runs-scored, and two RBI—and Ethan Pace of Henley—2-for-3, one run, and one RBI.
South boasted reps from Henley, Baker, Hidden Valley, La Pine, North Bend, LaGrande, Cottage Grove, Ontario, Phoenix, and Douglas. Douglas' Norton got the South rolling with a bang, crushing an RBI-double over the left-fielders' head, but the Trojans' start followed with five straight empty at-bats.
“We definitely want to swing it better,” Norton said. “Our whole lineup can hit the ball, we just need to come out a prove it tomorrow.”
