After his team—the South All-Stars—lost on Saturday, Douglas' Bryson Norton vowed that the South would bring their bats for the closing doubleheader of the 30th Anniversary of the 4A All-Star Series Sunday and sweep the North.
Both teams delivered as they combined for 41 hits. But Norton and his Southern allies put 25 of those hits on the board, backing up his guarantee with a sweep of the North, 11-9 and 8-5, to win the series outright.
Norton contributed a home run and a double in the opener, but only got to bat once in the nightcap.
The sweep gave the South the 2-1 series advantage, a statement that meant a lot more to these athletes than might be expected.
“It speaks really well for the South as a region,” Ryan Hayden of Hidden Valley said. “A lot of people don't look at the South as having much talent. As a player you hear a lot of talk from up North throughout the year.
“But the fact is there are a lot of good ball players down South that are hidden. So it was real nice to get the series sweep and prove we belong here as well.”
The Hidden Valley graduate just so happened to be one of those hidden gems. After batting 7-for-11 with a home run , double, four runs scored, and three RBIs for the series, Hayden was named Most Valuable Player. An impressive feat for an athlete who won't be playing at the collegiate level next season.
“It's a great honor to come up here and play good ball,” Hayden said. “But anyone could have gotten it (the MVP award). I just had a good series.”
Modesty you don't expect to hear at an All-Star outing, but the South's slugging numbers made up for Hayden's reserve. Twelve of the 15 players that saw a pitch made contact in the opener and a more unassuming 10-of-15 put the ball in play during the second contest.
Quite a few more awards were divvied out as worthy recipients became quite apparent after Sunday's offensive outpouring.
The Most Outstanding Player for the North and South were Dylan Peters of Seaside and Cole Brown of Baker, respectively. Peters hit 2-for-3 with one run and two RBIs while throwing three innings and giving up only one run. Brown hit 2-for-4 with two runs scored and also fanned six batters in four innings. He gave up three runs on two hits.
Josh Yundt earned Most Outstanding honors as pitcher of the South after throwing three innings and giving up two runs on five hits with no walks and two strikeouts. Austen Cote threw 3 2/3 innings and gave up only three runs on three hits to earn the award for the North.
Bobby Ragasa of La Salle and Kyle Hankins of Henley were named the Most Inspirational Players for their respective teams.
Thirty-five of 4A-baseball's finest were recognized as all-stars and 23 of them will be playing at the next level, though not all will step on a baseball diamond.
Norton will be attending Western Oregon University along with the South's Jordan Fugate of La Pine and the North's Michael Hamilton of Central, Daniel Haynes of Philomath, and Taylor Taft of Gladstone. Haynes and Taft will be on scholarship for football. Clint Sager of Hidden Valley and Jake Turner of Ontario will be handling the pigskin at the University of Oregon and Willamette University, respectively.
Also playing collegiately next season will be: Hankins and Ethan Pace of Henley (Oregon Institute of Technology), Mike Suthann of Hidden Valley and Jordan Decker of Phoenix (Lane Community College), Skyler Walton and Bryce Weidman of North Bend (Southwest Oregon CC), Grant Marcum of Baker (Fortune River CC), Jordan Harlow of Baker (Chemeketa CC), Yundt (Walla Walla CC), Mason Larkins of Gladstone (Clackamas CC), Mason Brause of Astoria (Linn Benton CC or Blue Mountain CC), Ragasa (Linn Benton), Carl Mason of North Marion (George Fox) and Trent Tegen of Stayton (College of the Siskiyous).
Cody Dordan of Newport, the Minneapolis Twins' 46th draft-pick who is on the wait-and-see program, as well as Dylan Peters of Seaside are undecided.
