A bigger and better Roseburg Hometown Fourth of July Fireworks show is planned for Stewart Park this year.

But a committee raising money to pay for the event is still seeking donations.

The committee has set a goal of $25,000 to pay for the show, said Barbara Gershon, treasurer for the Hometown Fourth of July Fireworks Committee.

As of Monday, the committee had raised $18,677 in cash and pledges. “Aren't people awesome?” Gershon said. “They're so generous.”

Fundraising, however, has been slowed by the county's struggling economy. The committee is a couple thousand dollars behind where it was at this time last year.

Donations generally are a little smaller than those received last year. “People are giving what they can,” Gershon said. “We're thrilled they're giving us anything.”

Despite that, donations have ranged from change dropped into donation cans around town to a single check for $500.

A union that represents firefighters with the Roseburg Fire Department has placed donation cans at 30 local businesses. The cans collected $592 the first week they were placed. Sherms Thunderbird and the Grocery Outlet have been selling “star” placards for a $1 donation. Sherms raised $1,300 for the fireworks show the first week it sold stars.

“This is local folks,” Gershon said, “individuals as well as businesses.”

Total donations collected so far include $5,000 the city's Visitor and Convention Commission pledged to the fireworks show. “But basically it's volunteers and voluntary money helping to get it done,” Gershon said.

The committee became a nonprofit organization in the spring, so donations are tax deductible. Donors may receive receipts for tax purposes.

Gershon said the committee is hoping those who come to see the show will donate. Donations will be collected at both Stewart and Fir Grove parks.

With the money raised the committee plans to put on a bigger and better show this year. Canby-based Western Display Fireworks will again set off the fireworks. Gershon said fireworks will light up the sky a little longer than last year's 40- to 45-minute display.

New this year, music will accompany the fireworks, which will blast off at about 9:55 p.m.

Starting at 6 p.m., food vendors will once again be hawking their wares. This year they will be at Fir Grove Park as well as at Stewart Park. The Umpqua Valley Arts Association will oversee the vendors in Fir Grove and receive a portion of the event proceeds.

Face painting and glow sticks will be sold at the event.

Local entertainment will follow at 6:20 p.m. Starting at 7:30 p.m., Amy Clawson, a country singer based in Florence, will entertain the crowd, committee member Bob Cotterell said.

Clawson tours throughout the West Coast, according to her MySpace page. She recently released her third album, “Cowboy Up.” She has shared the stage or recorded with many artists such as Martina McBride, Toby Keith and Kellie Pickler.

Rod Johnson also may be parachuting into the crowd as he did last year. And organizers are talking to representatives of the Air Force's 142nd Fighter Wing about F-15 planes fly over the city sometime between 10 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. July Fourth.

“Everything is in place for a safe and enjoyable birthday celebration (for the nation),” Gershon said. “We could use a little more donations. If people give a nickel, a quarter, whatever, it adds up.”
