Cost of reform inaction is greater

I think it's safe to say, Universal Health Care is on its way. We've been the only industrialized nation without complete health care for too long. Despite excellent care for some, our life expectancy and infant mortality lag in comparison.

More than half of bankruptcies in this country are related to a health crisis. Those with pre-existing conditions risk denial of future coverage with many insurance companies if they change jobs. Small business employers and families cannot afford increasing costs of health insurance.

The Administration tells us that the costs will be nearly neutral. That's a leap of faith perhaps, but there is sound reasoning in the three points the president makes. Research will help to find best practice recommendations which will allow doctors to be efficient, effective and lessen malpractice risks. Streamlining electronic records will prevent duplication of costly services and errors.

In the president's plan, which will allow Americans the freedom to choose their health care option, private insurance will continue, but there will be a public insurance option as well. Rather than force insurance companies out of business, a burden will be removed in the form of ever increasing premiums and administrative costs, and the need to “cost shift.”

Last but not least, health care reform will include emphasis on prevention, wellness and parity for mental illness treatment. Americans want accessibility to quality, affordable, portable healthcare guaranteed to all. As President Obama says, “The cost of inaction is greater.”
