With five years of experience, Shaun Henry decided he was ready to go out on his own and be a first-time business owner.

The 24-year-old opened his own mobile electronics shop, Kustom Akoustiks, a couple of weeks ago at 206 N.E. Channon St., Roseburg. He's leasing space from Kunnert Electric.

Henry will specialize in custom speaker boxes, sub enclosures and custom installation work of sound systems in vehicles. He is targeting the installation of high end audiofiles. He explained that as “the understanding of speakers, getting the best sound produced by them, how to make it sound better, event if they're in some odd places.”

Henry has experience in the business from working at Good Vibrations and Zoom Motorsports, both in Roseburg. He's also a recent graduate of a 10-week course at Mobile Dynamics in Tempe, Ariz., earning an advanced Mobile Electronics Certified Profession degree.

With the help of his parents, Don and Donna Henry, he decided he was ready to launch his own shop. He's planning a grand opening for July 18.

While he's now focusing on doing installations, he plans to sell products in his shop at a later time.

“This is something I've been wanting to do for the last three or four years,” he said. “It was just a matter of getting experience, then when my parents volunteered to help me out, here I am.”

His shop hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. His phone number is (541) 817-9393.

From wheels to wing chairs

Motorcycles have given way to furniture at 2675 N.W. Edenbower Blvd. in Roseburg.

The former Harley-Davidson store is on the verge of becoming Family Home Furnishings under the ownership of Greg and Kirstie Dakessian. The couple is planning for a July 6 opening with a grand opening to follow on July 18.

“Furniture stores are scarce on this side of town,” said Greg Dakessian of the location. “It's a great location with heavy traffic and great visibility from the freeway. It'll just give Douglas County new choices, more selection, good products for a decent price.”

The Dakessians have been working at the 8,000-square-foot-store for several weeks now, cleaning it up, putting in new carpet, putting up new signs and filling it with furniture for sale. The business will carry several brands of products.

Greg Dakessian has spent the past 16 years working for McMahon's Furniture. He was store manager in Roseburg for eight years and then the district manager for the past eight years for the nine stores in Oregon. He closed the Roseburg store on Jan. 18 when the McMahon's company went out of business.

Store hours will be 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sundays.

New on the hill

Denny's Restaurants and Pilot Travel Centers are partnering up across the U.S., and the first partnership to be confirmed on the West Coast is at Rice Hill in northern Douglas County.

June 21 marked the official opening of the Denny's in that travel center. Paul Fox of Canby is the owner of the Rice Hill Denny's. He also owns restaurants in Canby and Albany.

“Denny's Incorporated called me and asked me if I would open up a restaurant here,” Fox said last week from Rice Hill. “There used to be a restaurant in here, but we gutted the whole thing and now we have a brand new Denny's.”

There is seating for 148. Fox said the restaurant, that's open 24-7, has a total of 74 full- and part-time employees. Ray Sassaman, the former general manager of the Denny's in Roseburg, has moved to the Rice Hill area and is now managing that restaurant.

“Business has been pretty good,” said Fox of the first week.

Color him professional

Eric Saylor is getting an early jump on putting his business administration major to work. He's mixing his studies with his summer job.

The Roseburg High 2008 graduate just finished his freshman year at Oregon State University. He's a business major who is now doing an internship with Collegeworks, a nationwide exterior building painting business that is licensed and bonded. He's the company's branch operator for Douglas County.

After taking four 12-hour training courses, Saylor has been doing free estimates and taking orders since early this year. He has 15 homes lined up for painting so far this summer. The painting crew also includes college kids.

“There was a steep learning curve, but I like it,” Saylor said. “The response has been good so far.”

Saylor can be reached at 784-5196.

BIZ BUZZ

Relay for Life of Douglas County is the recipient of the goodwill of a Canyonville man who wishes to remain anonymous. Horizon Honda of Roseburg recently held a drawing, no purchase necessary, for those who had taken a test drive. The grand prize was $500. The drawing winner then opted to donate the money to the charity of Horizon's choice. That's Relay for Life, an annual walk-a-thon fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. A rose for that man.
