Klamath Falls sweep Dr. Stewart's

KLAMATH FALLS — Klamath Falls helped play out a worst-case scenario for the Dr. Stewart's American Legion baseball team Saturday night.

The Falcons' 11-5, 11-8 sweep at Kiger Stadium left the Docs 0-4 in Area 4 with a trip to two-time defending state champion Medford looming on Tuesday.

Dr. Stewart's (8-8, 0-4 Area 4) fell behind early in the opener, and looking to salvage a split in the nightcap, blew a lead in excruciating fashion — via a go-ahead grand slam from Nate McDaniel.

The Docs held 6-0 and 7-2 leads in Game 2 as Bo Younker homered in each of his first two at-bats.

But the Falcons (11-6, 4-2) inched their way back to 8-6, chasing starter Matt Thomson (0-1) with two on and one out in the sixth inning. Reliever Sky Woods walked the bases loaded with two outs before McDaniel stepped to the plate and crushed the ball out of the park.

Stephen Bigby earned the win, scatting six hits and striking out five in five innings of relief. The Docs shelled starter John Cullen for seven runs on nine hits, including a two-run shot from Younker in the first an a three-run bomb in the second.

Cameron Newell was 3-for-4 with two runs. Johnny Farrington, A.J. Royal and Jered Stoffal each had two hits.

Mike Mastroianni tripled and doubled for Klamath Falls.

The Falcons had 13 hits in the opener. Seth Brown was a triple short of the cycle — including a two-run home run that made it 6-1 — driving in three runs and scoring three times. Jake Waardenburg tossed a complete game, giving up five runs — three earned — on nine hits while striking out nine.

Jordan Guthrie hit a three-run home run for the Docs in the fifth inning and A.J. Royal followed with a line drive home run to make it 6-5.

But Klamath Falls came back with two in the bottom half of the inning and three more in the sixth and the Docs didn't threaten again. Brandon Jackson (1-1) took the loss.

Dr. Stewart's faces Medford (19-4, 3-1) in a Tuesday doubleheader at Harry & David Field.
