Pepsi baseball team cracks open wins

AMERICAN LEGION BASEBALL

Darren Nelson hit a game-winning single in a nightcap game against the Umpqua American Legion baseball team, ensuring Class A Pepsi a sweep over the Blaze. The Bottlecaps won 5-3 in the opener and 6-5 in Game 2.

Pepsi pitcher Jared Priestley struck out five and allowed four earned runs in 5 2/3 innings in Game 1. The Bottlecaps used consecutive hits by Micah Audiss, Jay Tovey and Blayne Sterling in a four-run third inning to take a permanent lead in the opener. Dylan Boucher finished 2-for-3 for the Blaze.

Nelson hit a screaming line drive down the third-base line in the bottom of the seventh inning with the nightcap tied, scoring Joe Emery and clinching the sweep. Emery, who finished with two hits, doubled and then stole third base to set the stage.

“It could have gone either of two ways,” Pepsi head coach Richie Charles said. “We could have packed it in and been happy with a split, or kept fighting. The kids kept fighting.”

Tory Smith pitched a three-hit shutout with one walk and two strikeouts in four innings of work in the nightcap. Boucher hit a two-run home run to right field in the top of the third inning. Dustin Maurer added two hits for the Blaze, who led 5-0 until the fourth inning.
