Forget the sparklers, snakes and smoke bombs.
With several communities boasting “the best fireworks display” in Douglas County, there are plenty of opportunities to witness extravagant explosions this year for the Fourth of July, which falls on Saturday.
Many towns are also hosting day-long celebrations with barbecues, games, contests and live music that will culminate long before the sky erupts in red, white and blue.
Glendale 2009 July Fourth Celebration
Today — opens at noon in Glendale City Park with carnival games for kids. Starting at 1 p.m., kids ages 1 to 12 will have their chance to take a swing at piñatas. Bingo in the park is from 2 to 4 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m. and the stage will be open to local talent from 4 to 6 p.m. and 8:30 to 10 p.m. A cake walk will be held from 7 to 8 p.m.
Friday — Breakfast in the park from 8 to 10 a.m. followed by bingo from 10 to noon. A silver scramble for kids ages 1 to 12 is set for noon. Stage will be open to local talent from 1 to 3 p.m. and 4 to 7 p.m. Bingo games are set for 2 to 4 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m. Karaoke is set for 7 to 10 p.m. Carnival games will be ongoing.
Saturday — Breakfast in the park from 8 to 10 a.m. followed by carnival games until noon. Local talent open mic from 10 a.m. to noon. Parade lineup is at 12:30 p.m. and the parade begins at 1:30. Awards will be given out after the parade at the stage. Soap box derby starts at 4 p.m. for kids ages 5 to 12. Fireworks at Glendale High School at dark. Sponsored by the Cow Creek Valley Community Association.
Riddle Sawdust Jubilee
Friday — Booths and beer garden open in Riddle City Park at noon. A pet contest is set for 2 p.m. and a watermelon-eating contest will follow at 4 p.m. Square dancing starts at 5 p.m. A kids logging competition for ages 16 and younger starts at 5 p.m. and the Itty Bitty Bikini and Little Mr. Muscle contest for ages 3 to 5 is set for 6 p.m. Talent show preliminaries will be held on the park stage at 7 p.m. Local musicians and DJ Kenny Holmes will provide music throughout the day.
Saturday — Sawdust Jubilee breakfast from 8 to 10 a.m. at the Riddle Community Center. Parade lineup is at 10 a.m. in front of Riddle Elementary School. Riddle Sawdust Jubilee Stick Horse Race is set for 10:30 a.m. on Main Street. National Guard flyover at 10:45 a.m. Parade begins at 11 a.m.; lineup is on Park Street. Barbecue and beer garden opens at noon. Car show from 12:30 to 3 p.m. Chalk art contest 3 p.m. Talent show finals on the park stage at 5 p.m. Fireworks display at 10 p.m. at the Ridle High School football field. Sponsored by the Riddle Lions Club.
Sunday — Riddle Fire Department Duck Race 1 p.m., starts at the bridge on Main Street. Ducks are $5 each and can be purchased until Saturday at the Riddle Trading Post, Keele's Machine Shop or Carol and Larry's True Value. Cash prizes.
Myrtle Creek Music in the Park
Today — 6 p.m., Millsite Park. The Oregon Coast Lab Band “Evolution” will perform a set of jazz. Free concert and parking. Chairs, blankets, well-behaved pets and picnicking wome.
Winston Fourth of July Community Celebration
Friday — Riverbend Live! kicks off with Nathan Williams and the Zydeco Cha-Chas. Blues/folk/Cajun music. The concert is free and open to the public and will be held in Riverbend Park. No pets, please.
Saturday — Graffiti competition from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Riverbend Park. Molly McGinnis Memorial Fun Day at the small baseball diamond for special needs children from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Parade begins at 1 p.m. The skateboard contest starts at 2 p.m. and continues until 7 p.m. at the Winston Skate Park. Softball tournaments are at 2 p.m. Bingo is scheduled from 1 to 7 p.m. and a car/motorcycle show is scheduled for 2 p.m. Burger Blast competition starts at 2 p.m. in the park. Glow-in-the-dark dodge ball is set for dark. The Oregon Coast Lab Band “Evolution” will perform from 7:30 to 10 p.m. Fireworks will follow. Sponsored by the Winston Safari Lions Club.
Roseburg Hometown Fourth of July Fireworks
Saturday — Celebration begins at 6 p.m. at Fir Grove Park and Stewart Park. There will be food vendors, games, face painting, glow sticks for sale and more. Local entertainers will perform throughout the evening; starting at 7:30 p.m., country singer Amy Clawson will perform. Music will accompany the fireworks at 9:55 p.m.
Glide Independence Day Celebration
Saturday — Celebration begins at 5:30 p.m. on Glide Middle School grounds. Barbecue, hot dogs, watermelon, cotton candy, bounce houses, games and live music by several local musicians and bands throughout the night. Fireworks begin at 10 p.m. Sponsored by the Christian churches of Glide.
Oakland July Fourth Community Celebration
Saturday — Parade begins at noon at the Washington School gym and ends in Oakland City Park where there will be games, a barbecue, a water balloon toss and entertainment by the Oakland Community Chorus. Tickets for food items will be sold for 25 cents, 50 cents and 75 cents. The celebration will end at 4 p.m. Sponsored by the City of Oakland and the Oakland Community Response Team.
North Douglas County Fireworks Event and the Yoncalla Rodeo
Saturday — Weekend activities kick off with a parade through Yoncalla at 10:30 a.m. The parade starts at the high school and loops through town. A variety of activities will be offered at the Yoncalla Rodeo Grounds at noon. The 2009 Yoncalla Rodeo begins at 1 p.m. and will be followed by a barbecue and kids events. Ice cream social at 5 p.m. at the Yoncalla Community Center. The Booher Brothers will entertain at 7 p.m. Fireworks are dusk at the Yoncalla High School baseball fields.
Sunday — Activities continue with kids' events at noon. The second day of rodeo fun begins at 1 p.m.. All activities take place on the rodeo grounds. Sponsored by the North Douglas Betterment committee.
Reedsport/Winchester Bay/Gardiner July Fourth Celebration
Saturday — An Independence Day Celebration will begin in Gardiner at noon. There will be games, snail races, a water balloon toss and a potluck picnic. All of the activities will take place at the end of Front Street. Fireworks displays are scheduled for both Gardiner and Winchester Bay at dark.
Diamond Lake July Fourth Celebration
Friday, Saturday and Sunday — Barbecue each day at noon in front of the main lodge, games, a talent show on the 4th and live music by the country rock/easy listening band Timberwolf. The fireworks display over the lake will start at 10 p.m.
