ASHLAND
Douglas High track and field standout Michael Ruppert has signed a letter of intent to compete for Southern Oregon University next spring.
Ruppertfinished second in the discus at the OSAA Class 4A state championships in Hayward Field in May with a throw of 150 feet, 11 inches. He owns a lifetime bests of 152-4 in the discus and 49-11 in the shot put.
Ruppert, coached by SOU alum Barrett Smith, will compete in the shot put, discus and hammer throws for the Raiders.
“Michael will really impact our throws,” SOU track coach Brent Ericksen said. “It will be fun to see how well he picks up the hammer event for us. I especially like the fact he has the potential to do very well in all three throws.”
MISSOULA, Mont.
University of Montana golfer and Sutherlin High graduate Jacqueline Olson was named to the Big Sky Conference spring All-Academic team.
Student athletes had to compete in at least half of their team's competitions and finish the spring semester with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.20. Olson is majoring in anthropology.
Olson was one of 36 Grizzlies to made the list.
Olson, a 2006 graduate who helped Sutherlin to a state title, was Montana's No. 2 golfer this spring with an average score of 80.7 strokes. The Grizzlies were fourth at the Big Sky championships in April.
WINSTON
Douglas High sophomore-to-be Brian Middleton threw a no-hitter to help the Trojans advance to the second round of the Junior State Division 2 League Tournament on Monday.
Middleton struck out six and walked two in a 15-1 Douglas romp. Ryan Dancer and Levi Hastings backed the crafty left-hander's performance by hitting run-scoring doubles in the contest.
GLIDE
The Glide Recreation Department is looking for football coaches for the upcoming fall season. Positions are available for third/fourth grade flag, fifth grade tackle and sixth grade teams.
Signups for football and 3-6 grade volleyball will be Sept. 1 from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Glide Elementary.

DRAIN
The North Douglas Junior State baseball team won the Emerald League tournament June 26-28, wrapping up a 14-5 season.
The Warriors defeaded Junction City 8-5 in the semifinals and Monroe 7-0 in the championship game last Sunday.
Against Monroe, Jay Davis and Tyson Tinnes combined on a two-hit shutout against Monroe. Tanner Toy hit a pair of doubles while Dylan Armstrong and Tinnes each added two-base hits.
Earlier in the day against Junction City, North Douglas trailed most of the game until Austin Potter hit a go-ahead two-run home run in the fifth inning. The Warriors added three more insurance runs in the sixth.
Garrett Jenkins and Davis each had two hits and Tinnes scored three runs. In two games, North Douglas pitchers walked only four batters.
North Douglas deated Creswell 13-5 in the quarterfinals.

SALEM
Three Douglas County athletes turned in strong performances at the state Junior Olympics Championships last weekend at Willamette University and qualified for the Pacific Northwest Regional Championships July 12-13.
Savannah Swan, of Oakland, won the youth girls discus title with a throw of 101 feet, 1 inch. David Henry, an Umpqua resident who will attend Oakland High this fall, placed fourth in the youth boys discus with a throw of 128-5.
Sutherlin's Ryan Comstock placed fourth in the intermediate boys 110 high hurldes in 18.8. All three marks were personal bests.
The regional meet will also be held in Salem.
ROSEBURG
Roseburg High senior-to-be Tim Harker set the course record in the second annual Run for the Arts 5K on Saturday. Harker won in a time of 16 minutes, 50 seconds.
Dorene Bennett, also of Roseburg, was the top female, finishing in 23.59.
Thirty nine Umpqua Valley Arts Festival goers participated in the run, including seven in the 1.5-mile walk. Proceeds went to the Umpqua Valley Arts Association.

SALEM
Madison Cavens competed in the USA Junior Olympics last weekend.
Competing in the 14-15-year-old bracket, Cavens finished in ninth place in the 200 m with a time of 27.9 and fourth in the 100 m hurdles at 16.4. Both were PRs for Cavens. Her time in the 100 m hurdles qualified her for Regionals.
Regional competition is set for Willamette University in Salem July 11-12. Cavens is coached by Josh Heacock.

Hiking club plans
trip to mountain, bluff
The Friends of the Umpqua Hiking Club is planning a July 11 hike to Soda Mountain and Hobart Bluff.
This will be a two-for hike. It is an easy 2.4 miles to Hobart Bluff and a moderate 4.2 miles round trip to Soda Mountain. Great views include Mount Shasta, Mount McLoughlin and others in between. Wild flowers abound.
The group will meet at 8 a.m. on the day of the hike in the Douglas County Courthouse parking lot.
Bring lunch, water, mosquito repellent and be prepared to share expenses for a car pool.

John Seuss of Roseburg hit a hole-in-one at the Umpqua Golf Resort on Tuesday, acing the 13th hole. Suess used a 5-iron on the 165-yard shot, which was witnessed by Kevin Sullivan, Brendon Sullivan and Brett Sullivan.
MYRTLE CREEK
Roseburg's Mollie Winship highlighted a strong performance by local cowboys and cowgirls at the South Douglas Rodeo on June 13-14.
Winship won the breakaway roping title with a time of 3.4 seconds. A June 13 article in the News-Review stated Jamie Nunnellee was the champion. Winston's Shay Smith was fourth in the event at 5.3 seconds.
Yoncalla's Brian Thompson won the all-around cowboy honors. Thompson finished third in steer wrestling at 5.7 and was second in team roping at 7.10.
Rusty Thompson, also of Yoncalla, was second in steer wrestling 4.7 and was third in team roping at 11.0.
Roseburg's Del Foley was fourth in calf roping at 11.7.
ROSEBURG
Fall sign-ups are under way for Boys & Girls Club of the Umpqua Valley tackle football and volleyball.
Early registration for both sports will run through July 24, with a cost of $85 for football and $60 for volleyball. On-time registration (July 25-Aug. 7) will go up to $95 for football and $70 for volleyball, with late registration (Aug. 8-21) costing $105 and $80 respectively. Scholarships are available.
Volunteer coaches, team parents, scorekeepers are needed. Officials are also needed and they will be paid.

SUTHERLIN
The Umpqua Golf Resort is hosting the Premier Insurance 3-man Scramble July 10-12.
The tournament is open to amateurs only, but players must have a USGA GHIN No. and index. Players will be grouped in an ABC scramble format, with A=0-12.3, B=9.6-18.6 and C=16.0-27.7.
The team handicap is based on 1/6 total adjusted handicap. There will be a four-drive minimum and seven-drive maximum.
A blind draw horserace is July 10 at 5 p.m. with a 4 p.m. check-in. The Friday night special even is from 7 to 9 p.m. There will be a 9 a.m. shotgun start on July 11-12.
The $450 entry fee includes appetizers and a no-host bar on July 10, lunch following each round, team green fees on July 11-12 and a $150 retail tee prize per player. A practice round is available for $20.
There will be k.p. and long drive competitions each day. $12,000 is available in prize money based on a full field. Entries close July 8.

The Umpqua Community College women's basketball coaching staff will hold a speed and agility camp for boys and girls in grades 4-10 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. July 7-9 in the UCC gym.
The camp will provide an opportunity for athletes of all sports to learn correct running and movement mechanics which result in increased speed, agility, quickness and reaction time.

An offensive skills camp for boys and girls in grades 4-10 will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 7-9 in the UCC gym. The three-day camp will be run by Riverhawks women's basketball coach Dave Stricklin and his staff.
The camp will cover fundamentals of offensive basketball, including shooting, ballhandling and passing. A variety of drills and games will be used with an emphasis on skill improvement. Afternoon swimming is also included in the $50 fee.

Yoncalla's Brian Thompson won the all-around cowboy honors. Thompson finished third in steer wrestling at 5.7 and was second in team roping at 7.10.
Rusty Thompson, also of Yoncalla, was second in steer wrestling 4.7 and was third in team roping at 11.0.
Roseburg's Del Foley was fourth in calf roping at 11.7.

Fall sign-ups are under way for Boys & Girls Club of the Umpqua Valley tackle football and volleyball.
Early registration for both sports will run through July 24, with a cost of $85 for football and $60 for volleyball. On-time registration (July 25-Aug. 7) will go up to $95 for football and $70 for volleyball, with late registration (Aug. 8-21) costing $105 and $80 respectively. Scholarships are available.
Volunteer coaches, team parents, scorekeepers are needed. Officials are also needed and they will be paid.

SUTHERLIN
The Umpqua Golf Resort is hosting the Premier Insurance 3-man Scramble July 10-12.
The tournament is open to amateurs only, but players must have a USGA GHIN No. and index. Players will be grouped in an ABC scramble format, with A=0-12.3, B=9.6-18.6 and C=16.0-27.7.
The team handicap is based on 1/6 total adjusted handicap. There will be a four-drive minimum and seven-drive maximum.
A blind draw horserace is July 10 at 5 p.m. with a 4 p.m. check-in. The Friday night special even is from 7 to 9 p.m. There will be a 9 a.m. shotgun start on July 11-12.
The $450 entry fee includes appetizers and a no-host bar on July 10, lunch following each round, team green fees on July 11-12 and a $150 retail tee prize per player. A practice round is available for $20.
There will be k.p. and long drive competitions each day. $12,000 is available in prize money based on a full field. Entries close July 8.

The camp will provide an opportunity for athletes of all sports to learn correct running and movement mechanics which result in increased speed, agility, quickness and reaction time.

An offensive skills camp for boys and girls in grades 4-10 will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 7-9 in the UCC gym. The three-day camp will be run by Riverhawks women's basketball coach Dave Stricklin and his staff.
The camp will cover fundamentals of offensive basketball, including shooting, ballhandling and passing. A variety of drills and games will be used with an emphasis on skill improvement. Afternoon swimming is also included in the $50 fee.

MEDFORD — The Clint Newell Cruisers suffered one of their most humbling losses Wednesday in an otherwise strong Junior State season as they were shut out 12-0 in five innings in the league holiday tournament semifinals.North Medford had 12 hits on the day.
