DAVIS: RHS quarterback rushes for career-high 130 yards
KEIZER — Senior tailback Josh Weaver ran for two touchdowns, senior fullback Lucas Corder rattled off a stunning 92-yard rushing score and the Roseburg High football team improved to 2-0 with a 28-7 victory over McNary Friday night at Flesher Field in a non-conference game.
The Celtics (0-1) defeated the Indians twice last season, winning 28-0 at Finlay Field and 27-20 in Keizer in a first-round playoff game. Roseburg ended a six-game losing streak on the road.
“A win over McNary is great,” said Roseburg coach Thurman Bell, who collected his 290th career win. “The first half was frustrating ... it looked like we were in quicksand and I think the heat got to both teams. But I'm very pleased with the way we came out in the second half. We were a different club and dominated the ballgame.”
The contest was scoreless entering the second half, when the Tribe's offense came alive.
Corder finished with a game-high 123 rushing yards on 10 carries. Quarterback Thaddeus Davis ran the ball six times for a career-high 130 yards — including 57- and 55-yard gains — and went 8-for-17 passing for 127 yards and a touchdown.
Weaver ran in 5- and 3-yard scores, giving him four touchdowns on the year. Corder's 92-yard explosion, which came with about 35 seconds to go in the third quarter, gave Roseburg a 20-0 advantage.
“We didn't make many Xs and Os adjustments (at halftime),” Bell said. “We just needed to come out and get after it, and the kids responded. We gave up some plays, but made some plays.”
On Corder's touchdown, Bell said, “It was about third-and-five and we ran the triple option. Thaddeus (Davis) made a great read on it. They were playing us outside and it just opened up inside. Lucas looked like he was the fastest guy on the field.”
Micah Audiss caught a 34-yard TD pass from Davis early in the fourth quarter. Corder sacked McNary quarterback Kyle Ismay and forced a fumble to set the stage.
“Micah just started working at wide receiver this week,” Bell said. “He'll play wherever we need him.”
Ismay threw a 36-yard touchdown pass with 8:09 left in the fourth quarter.
Roseburg outrushed the Celtics 321-78. Derek Priestley made three receptions for 54 yards and lineman Sean Burris picked up a fumble and rushed for 23 yards in the fourth quarter. Kicker Lucas Walker made all his PAT attempts, but missed a 41-yard field-goal try wide left in the second quarter.
Mitch Huff had an interception in the first quarter and Audiss, starting at strong safety, made a key stop in the red zone in the second quarter.
The Indians trounced Gresham 38-17 at Finlay Field in their opener. Roseburg will begin a three-game homestand next Friday against Beaverton (1-1), which lost 23-20 to McKay Friday.
