At the time of his death he was a member of the First Landmark Missionary Baptist Church in Winston, Oregon. He served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II, and while attached to the USS Atlanta was among the first American military personnel to set foot on its shores following the bombing of Nagasaki.
On May 20, 1950, he married Bonnie T. (Teresa) Harper in Sheridan, Arkansas, then moved his new bride to the Pacific Northwest. He worked in the lumber industry, retiring from Weyerhaeuser in Klamath Falls, Oregon, in 1989, then moved to Winston, Oregon.
