Oct. 4-10 is National 4-H Week, and Douglas County is celebrating.
This is the kickoff to the new 4-H year. Community clubs are accepting new members, after-school programs are being jump-started and volunteers from the community have the chance to become OSU-trained 4-H leaders. Look for 4-H Ambassadors throughout the community spreading the word.
Soon, children all over the county will be receiving invitations to our 2009 4-H Fall Fair. Starting at 1 p.m. Nov. 11, 4-H youth and volunteers will connect with the community by hosting a 4-H Fall Fair. Youth from grades kindergarten to 6 are invited to register now. The event will take place at Wellspring Bible Fellowship Church on Garden Valley in Roseburg. Plan on attending the 4-H Fall Fair right after enjoying the Veterans Day Parade in Roseburg.
The 4-H Fall Fair is a free event that offers hands-on sessions for kids to learn more about some of the different project areas that are available in 4-H. In addition to learning more about 4-H, participants at the Fall Fair will select four classes to attend and will learn skills and/or leave with a cool handmade item. There are 10 sessions being offered this year. Past sessions have included Baking Basics, Leather Crafts, Creative Cards, Photography Frenzy, Forestry Fun, Wiggles and Wags, Magic of Electricity, Meet Mr. Roboto, Fantastic Fleece and Bead it.
There is no fee for this event and participants do not need to be 4-H members to attend. Registration ends Nov. 2 and space is limited, so call the OSU Extension Office today at the telephone number below for more information or to sign up. Parents are encouraged to stay and attend the parent sessions we are offering on Urban Forestry and Gardening/Landscaping.
4-H Fall Fair is a celebration of 4-H and to show people firsthand what 4-H is all about. The fundamental 4-H ideal of practical, learn-by-doing experiences encourage youth to experiment, innovate and think independently. 4-H programs are offered through school-based, after-school and camp settings and within community clubs.
You can join the 4-H community today. To learn how to become a 4-H member or volunteer leader, contact the Douglas County OSU Extension Service at 541-672-4461 or 1-800-883-7568, or go to our Web site at http://extension.oregonstate.edu/douglas/4h.
Also become a fan of Douglas County Oregon State University Extension on Facebook. You will find announcements for upcoming events and pictures of what 4-H youth are doing in the community.
4-H is a community of 6 million young people across America learning leadership, citizenship and life skills. Find out more by getting in touch with us and helping us celebrate National 4-H Week.
