CANYONVILLE — The City Council has scheduled interviews next week with three candidates for the interim city administrator's position.
Bill Curtis, a retired Gold Beach city manager who has served as interim manager in other cities, is one of the candidates. Larry Clucas, former city manager in Umatilla is another, along with Janelle Evans, a former public works administrator in Reedsport.
“My sense is that all three of them are fine candidates,” said Frank Braudt, the Canyonville City Council president.
The three candidates were chosen out of more than 20 people who applied for the job. Jamon Kent, a consultant from the Lane Council of Governments, helped sift through the applications and recommend finalists to the council.
Evans will be interviewed at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Curtis will have his interview at 7 p.m. the next evening, followed by Clucas at 8:15 that same night.
All of the interviews will be held at the council chambers at city hall, 250 N. Main St. Each session will be open to the public and residents are invited to attend.
Former City Administrator Cheryl Masotto quit late last month after her husband, Rick, accepted a job with the city of Toledo. Rick Masotto had served as a Canyonville public works operator.
The council is considering whether to go from a city administrator to a city manager when the permanent position is filled. The council currently handles personnel matters. Under a manager form of government, that person could take over those duties.
The council has not yet made a decision on whether to do that. Braudt said councilors would wait until the interim administrator is hired before making up their minds. The temporary administrator will be involved in the hiring process for the permanent administrator.
