MOUNTAIN VIEW CONFERENCE FOOTBALL: North Douglas clinches first playoff spot since 2000

DRAIN — For a half, the North Douglas football team faced the same pesky Glendale team that had caused so much trouble for all the top teams in the Mountain View Conference.

Then Glendale saw the North Douglas team that routed most of the teams on its schedule as the Warriors pulled away for a 33-8 win Friday night.

The win clinched the Warriors' first Class 2A state playoff berth since 2000 and kept alive their MVC title hopes, but it didn't come easily. North Douglas (7-1, 4-1 MVC) led only 12-0 in the third quarter and the Pirates lurked just like they did in a seven-point loss to Oakridge and a four-point loss to Monroe.

But turnovers negated any Glendale offensive gains and the Warriors took control by scoring a pair of touchdowns in a five-minute span across the third and fourth quarters.

Mason Colburn rushed for 149 yards and two touchdowns in the first half and Jordan Hicks threw two TD passes in the second half.

“We made a few adjustments at halftime and caught them off guard a few times,” Colburn said. “The defense was always playing good all game, it was the offense that had to step it up.”

On a muddy night, Glendale (1-6, 1-4) fumbled eight times, losing five of them, and threw two interceptions. After Colburn's 34-yard TD run put North Douglas on the scoreboard late in the first quarter, the Pirates fumbled at their own 29. Four plays later, Colburn scored from 17 yards.

“We had far too many turnovers and gave North Douglas a short field to work with,” Glendale coach Kenny Smith said. “It's been a season where we haven't caught a lot of breaks.”

The score remained 12-0 for the entire second quarter and most of the third, until North Douglas recovered a fumble at the Glendale 17.

Quarterback Jordan Hicks floated a pass to Dustin Bates, who bulled his way for a 14-yard gain, setting up a short Travis Adams TD run.

Glendale's ensuing drive made it to North Douglas territory, but Colburn intercepted Garrett Platt at the 25. That eventually set up a 35-yard TD pass from Hicks to Tanner Toy, making it 26-0.

Dylan Armstrong blocked a Glendale punt at the 27, and three plays later Hicks threw a 10-yard TD pass to tight end Garrett Jenkins as the Warriors built their largest lead.

“The offensive line took care of business,” North Douglas coach James Shelton said. “We had a talk at halftime about if this team wanted to keep things close or play up to their potential.”

Even the Pirates' scoring drive featured four fumbles. Nathan Kitchens caught a 45-yard bomb from Platt, getting tripped up at the 1.

Glendale fumbled but recovered a North Douglas fumble on the 3, setting Adam Morningstar's TD run. On the conversion, Luke McDonald caught a screen pass and leveled Bates at the goal line for two points.

YONCALLA — Chris Trevino capped a 12-play, 70-yard drive with a two-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter and the Eagles converted the point-after kick to edge the Irish in a Mountain View Conference game.

“We ran a little bit each play, all the way down and controlled the clock most of the fourth quarter,” Yoncalla coach Matt Bragg said. “The defense really came through. It was by far the best team effort we've had all season.”

Riddle led 6-0 for most of the game after defensive lineman Zack Reid intercepted a Yoncalla screen pass at the 5 and returned it for a touchdown, only to miss the point-after kick.

Trevino finished with 80 yards rushing and Scotty Meza had 50 yards. Tye Ellis caugh three passes for 74 yards for Yoncalla (2-4, 2-3 MVC). The Irish fell to 1-7 and 0-5 in league play.
