All Hallow's Eve is once again upon us. As ghosts and goons, princesses and pirates come out to play, they all must decide where to spend the most delightfully devilish night of the year. Events scheduled over the weekend offer a blend of family-friendly fun with an appropriate amount of Halloween horror.

Tradition reigns at the Neewollah Parade, ringing in its 36th year of downtown businesses opening their doors to be trick-or-treated as a way to “say thank you to the community for working and shopping with them throughout the year” according to an organizer, Stacey Crowe. The event is free and open to all, including pets on leashes.

This year, the parade of costumed youths begins staging Halloween afternoon, at 3:50 p.m. on the corner of Douglas and Jackson. The parade starts at 4 p.m., traveling south on Jackson Street to Lane Street, and trick-or-treating back up Jackson. Parental supervision is required, often creating a costumed family clan.

“It is really fun when parents will dress up also,” Crowe said. “We have had a beekeeper and their bees, Cruella and all her Dalmatians ... it's really cute when they match each other.”

The parade is earlier than in previous years because Halloween falls on a Saturday and many businesses aren't open as late on weekends.

Northwest Lifestyles at 445 S.E. Jackson St. will operate during its normal business hours on Saturday and still be able to participate in the event, owner Vicki Nielsen said. She said she encourages other downtown businesses to stay open for the Neewollah parade.

“I don't know why they wouldn't want to,” Nielsen said. “It is fun to see kids and families having fun. The kids are so cute and some of their outfits are so creative.”

Nielsen said she likes to take parts in “feel-good” events such as the parade that bring people downtown.

The quaintness of downtown is important to the parade, Crow said. It has always been held downtown and Neewollah is about tradition. “That means a lot to people,” she said.

“We like to refresh people's memories on how beautiful it is here and what we have to offer,” Nielsen said. “I wouldn't want to be anywhere else; downtown is the best.”
