Progressives not in the FDR mold

Franklin Roosevelt would roll over in his grave if he saw the direction that the progressive movement is now taking this country. Remember that the Bonneville project and the Tennessee Valley Authority were government investments in infrastructure to promote economic growth.

Today, many progressives advocate removing dams from the Columbia River. We are told that the future is green energy.

It is hard to believe that in today's business climate, where radicals fight every project that might impact the environment, a power grid necessary to bring massive alternate energy programs to fruition could even be built. In fact, T-Boone Pickens has pulled back his plans for wind farms in Oklahoma, due to his inability to finance a power grid system. Also consider the firestorm over a proposed LNG terminal in this area. Green power seems to be a diversion, not a true goal.

A major goal of the Obama stimulus bills was stated to be preservation of our industrial production. It is inconceivable that we can have industry, when we do not allow access to the natural resources needed to produce anything. Mining and agriculture are under siege? Produce a car without metal or plastic, when both materials are derived from mining?

Until we balance environmental concerns against economic realities, we will continue down the road to economic ruin. It matters little which health care program is promoted. The bottom line is that unless we have a viable economy, we will not be able to pay for any.

Ironically, command and control economies such as Russia tend to have horrible environmental protection records. We sacrifice the Russian arctic to preserve the Alaskan arctic? Sadly, as progressives drive us toward the Russian economic model, the environment will become less of an issue.
