Vern Green



Vernon C. Green, of Winston, Oregon, passed away on Thursday, October 29, 2009, at the age of 87. He was born September 18, 1922, in Lemmon, South Dakota, to parents, Charles and Mae (Davis) Green. He moved with his family to Lookingglass, Oregon, where he graduated with the first class of Lookingglass High School. He then attended Linfield College for several years. He married Norma Beaver before entering the US Navy to serve our country during WWII. During the war, he survived having the ship he was on, sunk in the Pacific Theatre. After the war he returned to Douglas County and worked for a short time as a delivery truck driver for Pepsi-cola. He then moved his family to Portland, Oregon, and began a career with Western Transportation as a crew member of a tug boat. It wasn't long before Vern earned his Captains/Pilot License. He retired in 1978. He later returned to Douglas County, settling in Winston, Oregon. Vern enjoyed sports, including basketball and boxing, but he especially loved baseball and was a season ticket holder for the Doc Stewart's games. He is survived by his daughter, Judy Mankes and her husband, Ed of Bainbridge, Washington. He also leaves a brother, Melvin Green of Medford, Oregon, and four grandchildren, Tanya and David Correll and John and Joseph Mankes. Vern has been also blessed with two great-granddaughters as well as several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two daughters, Nancy and Linda, two brothers, Joe and Les and a sister, Elva Denney. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, November 3, 2009, at Taylor's Family Chapel. Interment will follow at the Lookingglass Cemetery with military rites offered by the Veterans Of Foreign Wars, District Twelve Honor Guard.
