Mendoza shining for SW Oregon
Former Roseburg High soccer standout Manny Mendoza has scored seven goals and picked up three assists through Oct. 31 as a freshman on the Southwestern Oregon Community College men's team.
Mendoza, a scholarship athlete who graduated from Roseburg High School in 2009, leads the Lakers in scoring and is 10th in the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges. The starting forward is majoring in fire sciences at SWOCC.
As an Indian, Mendoza was a two-time All-Southwest Conference selection.

Gymnastics meet set for Saturday
Umpqua Valley Gymnastics is playing host to the Harvest Invitational on Saturday at its facility, located at 1034 Oak Street.
Session 1 (Level 4) gets under way at 9 a.m., followed by Session 2 (Levels 5-6) at 1 p.m. and Session 3 (Levels 5-6 and finals) at 5:30. Admission is $5 for adults, and $3 for seniors and kids.

EUGENE
U-11 soccer team unbeaten in league
The Roseburg Landsharks U-11 team completed the KIDSPORTS Klassic regular season on Oct. 25 with a 7-0-2 record. Their overall record was 10-1-2.
The Landsharks defeated the Marist Spartans 2-1 as Tanner Hunt scored both goals in the game for Roseburg. Goalkeeper Madison Lee had seven saves and midfielder Nathan Lund had an outstanding game.
Roseburg tied the South Eugene Axemen 1-1 in their second contest. Connor Cubic scored early in the game for the Landsharks. Bradley Kelley and Kylie Merlino had strong defensive games.
The Landsharks and the RSA Strikers played a close game on Nov. 1 at Fir Grove Field in the Fall Klassic Cup, with the Landsharks winning 2-1. It was a scoreless first half.
With about 10 minutes remaining in the second half the Strikers scored on a rebound off a penalty kick that had been blocked by Landsharks goalkeeper Madison Lee. Two minutes later Tanner Hunt scored to tie the contest. Daniel Rokus scored the winning goal off an assist from Connor Cubic with about three minutes remaining.

RSA soccer teams continue progress
Here are Roseburg Soccer Association results from Oct. 26-27:
Boys Development team — The Strikers earned a tough 1-1 tie against first place Bethel United Wolverines Saturday at Fir Grove Field. Steven Lake put in the Strikers lone goal in the second half in a scramble in front of the visitor's goal. Shane Sabins and goalie Walter Reustle turned in strong performances.
On Sunday Roseburg traveled to Eugene and came away with a 2-2 tie with the Eugene Metros. Lake scored the first Strikers goal, which was quickly followed by another tally from Ashton Faas. The U10s wrapped up league play with a 4-2-3 record, good for third place in the Kidsports U11 Emerald League.
M.C. Development team — The Myrtle Creek team wrapped up league play with a close 3-1 loss to Bethel United Gold in Eugene on Saturday. The Crew's Gentry Morgan scored lone goal for M.C.
On Sunday the boys tied the Marist Spartans 2-2 on goals by Riley Spears and Jaret Remington. The south county Development team finished league play with a 3-4-2 record.
U13 girls — The Firestorm won their final home game with a 1-0 victory over the Willamette United Celtic Sunday at RHS's Finlay Field. The game's only goal came just before the end of the first half when Claire Ibarra took Mason Seely's pass and guided it into the net. Goalkeepers Alysha Hamilton and Sarah Royce combined for the shutout, and fullback Brittany Eggers turned in a strong defensive game.
U14 girls — The Revolutaion remained undefeated with a tie and a win over the weekend. On Saturday at Willamette High School in Eugene, the Revolution drew 1-1 with the Eugene Kidsports Cheetahs. Roseburg came back from a 1-0 deficit on a Fiona Johnson free kick from 20 yard out. Courtney Little, Miata Winders and goalie Andre'a Bryant preserved the tie with a great defensive effort.
On Sunday at RHS's Finlay Field, the girls defeated the Clackamas United Cavs 3-0. Chelsey Luiz opened the scoring with a goal off a ricocheted shot in the 20th minute. Ten minutes later Johnson took a Savanah Espinosa pass at midfield, outran the opposition, and beat the keeper. In the 35th minute, Johnson scored again off a perfect cross from Raechel Warren. Bryant and Luiz combined for the shutout between the pipes.
The Revolution improved to first place at 7-0-4 in the OYSA Classic I bracket.
U-12 girls — The Tigers downed Hillsboro 2-1 behind outstanding defense from Rachel Harland and Sarah King. Katie Wright and Mahala Norris scored goals for Roseburg. The Tigers defeated Newberg 2-1 Sunday, with Harland, King and Taylor Stricklin playing strong defense. Kira Johnson scored to tie up the game, then Sayge Black scored the game-winner off an assist from Ashley Smith.

Wrestling officials to meet tonight
The first meeting of the season for the Douglas County Wrestling Officials Association will be at 6 tonight in Room M-105 in the Main Building at Roseburg High School.
