Senior Times: Volunteer opportunities



The cover story in today's Senior Times tells about the important work volunteers are doing for the Senior Health Insurance Assistance (SHIBA) program. If that programs interests you, SHIBA is looking for computer and Internet literate volunteers to assist those who wish to reevaluate their personal medication needs. Time commitment would be for six Mondays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Training is mandatory and is being offered on Thursday and again on Nov. 12 from 9 a.m. to noon. Registration is required, call 957-3006 and leave your name and phone number.

Christmas is coming, faster than many of us would like, yet it's something to keep in mind when you are looking for ways to make a difference in the lives of the veterans at the VA Hospital.

The American Legion folks are looking ahead to their annual Christmas gift shop for the patients. That's when volunteers gather in the auditorium at the hospital to help hospitalized veterans select gifts for their families from tables heaped with donated items. The volunteers do the gift wrapping, help to address gift cards and assist with the mailing of packages.

This is a great way to get in the special spirit of Christmas and show appreciation to the men and women who have borne the heat of the battle. Call VA Voluntary Services at 440-1272 and talk to Mary Kay or Bill.

United Community Action Network's Glide wood lot could use some help operating the wood splitter, loading and distributing firewood to low-income individuals and families in need. Vouchers are provided to those who meet the income requirements. Call Nancy at 492-3509 if you can lend a hand.

UCAN needs volunteers at their new Food Shares warehouse where food is sorted and distributed to the local food pantries. Nancy at 492-3509 will tell you more.

SMART program, a literacy support program for children in kindergarten through third grade, is looking for caring adults to read to the children. Can you give one hour a week to this effort? Call Kathy at 672-6477 to sign up.

Meals-on-Wheels volunteers bring both hot and frozen meals to frail homebound seniors. Choose the day and one of the countywide Senior Services locations that works for you and enjoy a free lunch plus mileage reimbursement for your time. Talk to Jeannie at 957-3608.

Foster Grandparents program helps children develop social, emotional and academic skills. If you like to be around children and you are 60 years or older and on a limited income you can get a stipend and mileage for helping. Training is provided. Berta can give you details at 957-3782.

Roseburg Chamber of Commerce wants volunteers to help for eight hours once a month to prepare the chamber's newsletter. Contact Gail at 672-2648 if you want to help.

The Umpqua Valley Humane Society needs volunteers who love animals to help with their program. Call John at 672-5240 and get more information.

Tax Aid is already looking forward to tax time. Training will begin soon for folks that want to help screen and welcome applicants as well as assist in filling out forms. If this is your area of interest, call RSVP at 957-3006.
