DRAIN — Using the old adage that to beat an opponent you have to think like your opponent, the Bonanza High football team did it's best North Douglas impression Friday night.

The Antlers used a methodical running game to control the clock and struck for the only score in a 7-0 win in the first round of the Class 2A playoffs.

The upset spoiled what had been a dream season for the Warriors, who were playing in their first playoff game since 2000. Sixth-ranked North Douglas (9-2) had a handful of chances at the end zone, but were largely held in check by Bonanza.

The Antlers (5-4) held the 2A rushing leader Mason Colburn to 65 yards on 17 carries.

“I thought they did a good job of learning our offense and kept us guessing all game,” North Douglas coach James Shelton said. “They really keyed on our guys — it wasn't just Mason, but everyone else.”

Salvador Madera ran for 105 yards on 16 carries and scored the game's only touchdown — a 27-yard run on the first play of the fourth quarter. Facing a third-and-2, Madera ran off tackle and up the right sideline to paydirt.

“They were starting to stack the box on us, so we changed the play up and went outside,” Madera said. “It was a game where you just had to keep hitting people so they wouldn't come back.”

The TD run was Bonanza's farthest by far. The Antlers churned out three- to five-yard runs to sustain drives that kept the Warriors off the field if nothing else.

“We've had quite a few ball carriers contribute this season, all of them pretty even,” Bonanza coach Beau Fullerton said. “Tonight, Salvador was having a good night so we went with him.”

Bonanza came into Drain with just a .500 record, but proved to be a battle-tested team from the Southern Cascade League. The Antlers host No. 1-ranked Knappa — a 42-10 winner over Santiam Saturday — in the second round.

“I thought we came in prepared to play a game like this,” Fullerton said. “We definitely weren't shocked by how North Douglas came out, and North Douglas was a tough opponent. For us to pull this out we really had to play our best.”

North Douglas' best scoring chance came in the closing seconds of the first half. After stopping Bonanza on downs at their own 40 with 48 seconds before halftime, Jordan Hicks ran a quarterback option keeper 33 yards and out of bounds. Colburn followed with an 18-yard run to set up first-and-goal at the Bonanza 9.

With 9 seconds left, Hicks threw a jump ball to the far corner of the end zone. Wideout Dustin Bates leaped to catch it, but couldn't drag a foot down and fell out of bounds. With one second left, Hicks missed a 26-yard field goal.

The Warriors returned the favor midway through the third quarter when Bonanza appeared to be driving for its first score. On fourth-and-2 from the North Douglas 6, Colburn zipped in to block an Alejandro Lopez field goal attempt and David Toy recovered the ball on the 24.

But on the ensuing drive, the Warriors couldn't convert an third-and-inches and punted, which eventually led to Madera's TD. Trying to tie the game, North Douglas turned the ball over on downs on one drive, and Bonanza's Ryan Stewart intercepted Hicks around midfield with 4:44 to play.

The Antlers had been 1-for-11 on third-down opportunities, but Madera converted three consecutive third-down tries and had eight carries along in a final, clock-melting drive.

“It's disappointing for sure,” Shelton said. “They fought hard, we fought hard. Seven points later and it's over. I thought our defense was especially tough, but they scored and we didn't.”

Colburn and Toy each had 14 tackles and Dylan Armstrong and Tyson Tinnes each had 12 stops. Lane Roseberry had seven tackles and Kelly six for Bonanza.

The game was the final one for 12 seniors who helped raise the North Douglas program from ashes. After two years of sending North Douglas players to play in a co-op with Yoncalla, Shelton was hired to ressurect the program in 2006. The Warriors won one game that season and two the next before posting a 6-3 mark last fall.

This season, North Douglas won its first four games, suffered a one-point loss to Central Linn at home but won out to grab a share of the Mountain View Conference title.

“These seniors have been with me from the beginning and through some butt-whoopings,” Shelton said. “They feel bad now, but I know how great they played.”

North Douglas loses Hicks, veteran guard Sam Thrower and several skill players, but returns Colburn and four starting offensive linemen.

“This was a new experience for everybody,” Shelton said. “The younger guys will now know what it takes to get farther than this. We'll come back and do this again.”
