A Roseburg man was taken into custody Wednesday afternoon after he allegedly ran from police on Plateau Drive.
At 2:30 p.m., officers responded to a report of a stolen 1998 Ford Taurus in the parking lot of a business on the 2700 block of Northwest Stewart Parkway, according to a Roseburg Police Department news release.
The car was gone when the officers arrived, but they found it on the 500 block of Plateau a short time later, the release said.
One of the officers stopped the car and ordered the driver to get out of the car and to lie down on the ground. Adam Smith, 21, of Roseburg got out of the vehicle and then allegedly reached for a handgun he had concealed in his waistband, the release said. He allegedly pulled out the handgun and then ran around the corner of a house.
The officer caught up with Smith and arrested him. A loaded 357-caliber handgun was recovered on the ground several feet from where Smith was arrested.
Smith was lodged at the Douglas County Jail on charges of attempting to elude police, unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful use of a firearm, tampering with evidence, driving while suspended — misdemeanor and unauthorized use of a vehicle.
